@eleon005 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely Hi @eleon005, pretty solid idea. Although student athletes don’t have a union, it would be wise to establish one or to act as one by having a system wide protest during the season to fight for their rights. That’d get their attention #UCR150 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
Week 10 of #UCR150: Ironically, we're ending the course by talking about activism. They face racism, lack of academic support, and are making them $. It's time to end the rule over their rights and give them the support and compensation they deserve @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
@AparicioArleth@MisssNallely @rabea_qamar This literally reaffirms the idea that the only way out is through their body, not their mind. It’s unfortunate that even when they’re in a place of learning, they might feel like they’re only their for the game #UCR150 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
Week 9 of #UCR150: Why do some college football programs only see the bodies of black athletes? Once some are deemed athletic, they are no longer valued for their mind. @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
@srobe006 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely Hi @srobe006, I agree. There are many benefits to having a unified and coordinator effort to be compensated appropriately. Do you think this is something that should be extended to all college workers, including non-athletes? #UCR150 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
Week 8 of #UCR150: Do college athletes have the same due process as everyone? Some argue that those rights diminish once they agree to compete in the NCAA, even though violating an NCAA is not a crime. @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
@sidrasiddiqui23@MisssNallely @rabea_qamar I agree, @sidrasiddiqui23. They are profiting from them but can't even compensate them nor provide them a proper education. Why is it that so many drop out or receive a degree that doesn't advance them? The same enthusiasm should be toward their major
@rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
Week 7 of #UCR150: How does commercialism in college sports undermine athletes' educational opportunities and rights? Their academic journey might be the one that requires less work. Not bashing on my fellow non-STEM majors, but I recognize its harder
@rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
@AldamaNeomi @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely Hi @AldamaNeomi, I think that that the NIL should put the same enthusiasm towards the fine print of their contracts. Though it is a celebratory event, students should be made aware of the risks if they decide to Transfer. #UCR150@MisssNallely @rabea_qamar
Week 6 of #UCR150: Why aren't athletes given the same treatment as their peers if they want to transfer to another university? Funny how colleges can give 1-year scholarships but athletes can't have a 1-year deal w/o being penalized @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
@andreasujeyA1 @MisssNallely @rabea_qamar Hi @andreasujeyA1, I completely agree. Some people would rather “play through the pain” to avoid getting benched. I also don’t understand how concussion trainings aren’t given to all parties, especially coaches. @MisssNallely @rabea_qamar #UCR150
Week 5 of #UCR150: Research into concussions is mixed & flawed. Schools have different policies & stances. Lack of clarity & proper enforcement to ensure the safety of our students. Yet another hands-off approach. We need more education and protection @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
@EsperanzaTalam1 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely I agree, @EsperanzaTalam1. Title IX was implemented to provide equal treatment and opportunities, instead, they used the "safe harbor" measure to slash men's programs so that they don't have to invest in providing women equal treatment @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely#UCR150
Week 4 of #UCR150: What role does media coverage play in making college sports "self-sustaining"? According to @WomensSportsFdn report, women receive much less coverage. How will this impact the amount of endorsements/investments from outside sources? @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
@BCARD38139413 @rabea_qamar I dont think it's fair. Being a student-athlete involves huge risks. You're pushing your body to its limit in order to compete, only to be left stranded if you get injured. The hype behind the NLI helps hide the fact that it's a bad 1-year deal #UCR150 @rabea_qamar @MisssNallely
