🚨 BREAKING 🚨
LAHSA report finds that the City of LA's anti-camping ordinance (LAMC 41.18) is INEFFECTIVE when it comes to:
• Housing unhoused people AND preventing their return to encampments in 41.18 zones
Criminalizing homelessness does not solve it. It makes it worse. 🧵
Over this weekend, several tenants at Hillside Villa received eviction notices. I am calling on Mr. Botz to work with my office to find a resolution and to immediately withdraw all evictions that have been issued to the tenants. My full statement below:
Yesterday, our resolution calling on the City to explore social housing as a model to ensure safe, healthy, and affordable homes for all residents of Los Angeles passed in Council. 🧵
These results are tragic, devastating and unacceptable. On any given night, more than 46,000 of our neighbors are unhoused in the City of LA and the vast majority are experiencing unsheltered homelessness.
Today there will be a lot of news about numbers. Here are some others per @CHPCnews, including 521K rental unit shortfall & too many struggling tenants.
The homeless count # will go down when the # of policies protecting tenants & building/preserving affordable housing goes up.
We found that the City does not have a list or map of all zones where it's illegal to park RVs overnight.
Last week, @cd1losangeles introduced a motion requesting data on vehicle dwelling, the Oversize Vehicle parking ban, and safe parking.

The first repayment deadline for the City of LA is coming up... for many, it's been a struggle to make current rent payments, let alone pay back debt accumulated during the pandemic.
If we don't address this debt, it could lead to another spike in evictions and homelessness.
Right now, almost 300 THOUSAND households in the county of Los Angeles have some amount of rent debt...
We already know it's a big problem, but we need your help to get a better idea of how it is affecting our communities. 🧵 #KeepLAHoused#HousingIsAHumanRight
Greg Abbott is using human beings for political theatre. These dangerous actions from far-right, weak-minded politicians who rely on stunts instead of actual leadership are exactly why we’re fighting to make LA a sanctuary city.
LA was built by immigrants and it thrives because of immigrants. We will continue to be a place that values and dignifies all human life, no matter who they are or where they come from. LA is for all.
The only thing that will stop these deaths is when @LACountyBOS finally shuts down MCJ & invests in proper mental health services & Pretrial reform.
Twin Towers & Men’s Central Jail are in CD1.
This isn’t a new emergency. I’m extremely disappointed in their lack of urgency.
I voted no on the budget today.
Budgets are a statement of values—and a budget that allocates one quarter of our entire budget to LAPD while underfunding every other department and service does not reflect my values or the values of my constituents.
Majority of council prefers to waste money criminalizing people, instead of preventing theft from happening.
I’ll be using our city resources to install anti-catalytic converter theft infrastructure in the cars of our community members.
Because criminalization won’t work.
An essay I wrote for @MensHealthMag on teaching 4th Grade in the Age of School Shootings.
