It's time to accelerate open weight models to the frontier.

And bring abundant tokens to all.

Today we launch Forge in partnership with Arcee, Microsoft, Vercel, Fireworks, and DigitalOcean: https://t.co/EJ5b8Mf9Wc

Introducing tsrs: a Rust port of the TypeScript compiler 🦀

We are not forking TypeScript!

◆ In close collaborating with the TypeScript team
◆ Up to 8x faster than TS 7.0 & ~70% less memory
◆ Runs in WASM, so it works in your browser & on Workers
◆ Soon part of the Oxc toolchain

@eugenennamdi_ Have you tried switching to standard or max mode? Forge models (GLM 5.3 etc) are experimental

@abdulstax For any prez, have your first 90-120 seconds fully rehearsed and from then it flows naturally

And if you assume it’s a “no”, and truly believe that, you get to have fun and not care too much- makes you more chill. Which ends up making you BETTER than you would have been nervous!

[Eric Simons @EricSimons]

In entrepreneurship, I’ve found it best to assume everything is a “no” by default

Forces you to really think hard about what value you can provide that *could* make it a yes

Then v easy to be chill & confident as you’re prepared for a no, nothing to lose

Opaque markets you will have to navigate in life:

- Raising VC money
- Selling your company
- Dating
- In some cases: Renting an apartment & buying a house
- In some cases: looking for a job

No follow-up usually means no interest (or in maybe 5-20% of cases, the need no truly longer exists)

There are some areas where you can tastefully follow-up without showing desperation if they item you're trading has materially changed in value. You can do this via:
- backchanneling
- some sort of public peacocking (press release, instagram story, launch video, etc.)
If it's really material, you can just follow-up

But generally, no follow-up = no interest (unless its unilaterally on one party to follow up ie dating in america). But you have to be careful to not seem desperate. As soon as someone smells desperation, it's over

Open weight models went from years behind the closed frontier to months, and soon weeks.

@EricSimons on @StackBlitz's bet on a trillion-parameter open model. Wondering why? Tune in when he gives his talk "Accelerating Open Weights to the Frontier"

Anthropic says it has reduced the data harvested from Claude in distillation attacks by around 90–99%. I congratulate them on this achievement.

It’s consistent with the point I made a few months ago (All-In Ep. 282): Anthropic, not the government, was in the best position to stop distillation of its own models. Once the horse is out of the barn, there’s limited value in after-the-fact government action.

At the time there was a major push in Washington to restrict open models on IP grounds. The threat looked serious enough that 50 companies — including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, IBM, Palantir, and Dell — published an open letter in defense of open-weight models. Jensen Huang promoted it in his first-ever X post. Nearly 200 startups sent a similar letter.

I argued that restricting open models risked removing the incentive for closed-model companies to solve the problem themselves — and could reward negligence by stifling competition while they continued collecting revenue from distillation. The administration did not impose those restrictions.

Now we see the result. Anthropic invested in defenses and they worked. Not every technical challenge is a reason to run to Washington for new regulation.

this is the golden age of startups, builders, and developers

[Eric Simons @EricSimons]

@GavinSBaker @OnodaCapital @grok 100%, and hyperscalers themselves could divert their phat FCF into model training

Google is the working example of this today- hyperscaler and frontier lab all in one

Related:

[Eric Simons @EricSimons]

“But if OAI/Ant fail, the ripples will be tsunamis that destroy the [entire economy/VCs/startups/semis/etc]”

Worst case outcome realistically is they get absorbed into hyperscalers at fraction of current vals

Bad for the shareholders who came in at high marks, but the hyperscalers would continue funding the party (model r&d, capex in DCs, etc) - as they already are

And we have a great working example of this hybrid- Google! A frontier lab and hyperscaler, all in one

And notably- Google is the only frontier AI lab not existentially at risk by these latest open source models. They have a great book of business as a hyperscaler, amongst other diversified biz lines

You may say “well google’s models have sucked recently, so not a good example”. But the likely cause for that is the brain drain we’ve witnessed from them to OAI/Ant, due to unmatchable equity packages that appeared almost too good to be true

But turns out, it’s increasingly possible that they were exactly as they appeared- but only now starting to get priced in

[Eric Simons @EricSimons]

@catalinmpit For Breitling in particular you don’t- buy used or grey market, 50%+ cheaper even for new/unworn

But in general, mechanical watches are awesome - but the difference between a Seiko ($300 or so) versus anything in the thousands is basically zero

[Eric Simons @EricSimons]

Each color vein is the life and death of an AI model

Like gold mining- new veins start small, some become very fat (woohoo, payday!), but in short order all get tapped to zero

Visualization of why EBITDA minus training is wework-tier nonsense

No new models, no new gold veins

It appears San Diego is screwed

[Colin McCarthy @US_Stormwatch]

Hurricane Rachel could bring significant impacts to SoCal Sunday into Monday, including coastal flooding from high tides and surf, potentially heavy rain and gusty winds as it transitions into a post-tropical storm.

This is a highly unpredictable forecast, so expect changes.
