going to be balanced here on a timeline that is pretty hyperbolized (long post and probs incoherent as im walking the dog)
what happened:
- the $matl devs had their coin, $matl, and then launched a different swarm coin
- @shawmakesmagic had previously said the project was going to be a lot bigger than people think (and fwiw, a friend of mine found the matl devs github repo and we saw the code too, and the swarm tech code was interesting)
- i believe shaw's endorsement was of this tech, and then what happened today is the $matl devs came in, used the eliza framework, and got turbo greedy launching a new project and leaving the existing matl community in the dust
what was bad:
- reality is shaw probably (definitely) shouldn't be endorsing projects, the reality is while may be looking at the code, the people in this twittersphere will take it as the token. which in this case, was a huge rug by these greedy $matl devs
- the reaction to the timeline was also bad, cant go into ultra defense mode and attack back
what the timeline did that was bad:
- i think the TL attacking and lashing out was probably a bit misguided. i lost a lot on $matl (again my own speculation, i got it wrong), but really i blame the $matl devs... they had really good code and couldve just launched it with $matl in mind, and they chose not to. they got greedy. but since they are unresponsive and an invisible enemy rn, people started punching at shaw because of the endorsement (again, i dont think shaw should be endorsing projects in any capacity, but i do believe him when he says he was talking about the code because i saw the github repos)
i personally dont think this changes the ai16z fundamental view though
TLDR:
- bad actors used open source eliza framework to launch
- they had really good code and a novel concept for a swarm - they had all the opportunity in the world to launch this for $matl and everyone wins
- they chose not to, and chose greed, and fucked everyone in the process
- rampage ensued on the timeline
The $matl devs are the enemy here, but since they are avoidant, no one can actually lash at them
was how shaw conducted himself on the timeline wrong today? yes
should shaw stop endorsing projects because the timeline will take them as endorsements of tokens? yes
but also want to be sure people realize who the actual enemy here with this whole thing is. shaw and ai16z didnt rug, the matl devs did. and honestly, i imagine shaw got duped in the process (i can attest their code was good and i really thought they would launch it to the benefit of $matl)
long post but i just see a lot of vitriolic takes on the timeline when multiple things can be true
- shaw didnt conduct himself well on the timeline
- people on the timeline lashed out at the wrong enemy
- no more ai16z endorsements of anyone using the tech since they will be taken as token endorsements, and this opens the door for bad actors (like the matl devs)
really dont want this to seem like im excusing the behavior of laughing at people on the TL who lost money (i lost a lot of SOL today on matl), but do want to provide the balanced take (especially since i did see the swarm github repo and i believe shaw when he says he was reacting to the code with that tweet)
