She noticed it in the mirror. Right there on her back, just above her waist.

She was 58. She'd had moles her whole life. She knew her skin. But this one was different it had come out of nowhere, and it didn't look like anything she'd seen before.

Her husband looked at it. Said it was probably nothing.

She went to the dermatologist anyway.

Biopsy came back: basal cell carcinoma. The dermatologist said it was caught early and scheduled a Mohs procedure for six weeks out.

Six weeks is a long time to sit with something on your back.

She started reading. She'd always been the type. When her mother got sick, she was the one with the folder. When her husband had his heart scare, she was the one asking the cardiologist questions he didn't want to answer.

So she read. Late at night after he went to sleep. The same word kept showing up.
