The Giants were basically on the cap line going into Week 1. OTC had them about $1.2M OVER.
So yes, the Jameis/Runyan extensions were about keeping good players. They were also cap moves.
Jameis had a $5M cap hit in 2026.
Runyan was at $11.75M.
Jameis gets 2 more years/$13M.
Runyan gets 2 more years/$22M, with $21.5M guaranteed.
Now the Giants can lower the 2026 base salaries, turn some of it into bonus, and spread those hits into 2027/28.
Exact savings are not out yet, but this is how you create room for an in-season move without cutting somebody useful.
Dart is cheap. The next 2-3 years are when you SHOULD be aggressive.

This is the story of essentially every Aaron Boone managed team. They can beat the stuffing out of shitty teams + occasionally rip apart a good team, but it's those one run games that typically show up in October and it's where they always struggle the most. No different in 2026.
