Instead of thinking, how do we get everyone to the same place at the same time, it is more essential to ask, how do we help people move from their point A to their point B?
This doesn’t mean that we don’t have the same goals or big areas that we are focused on getting to together. It just means that our journey can look different on how we achieve these goals.
Allyson Apsey and I just finished the first draft of #WhatMakesAGreatPrincipal and in it, we identified 5 different pillars that are essential for great leadership. We also have some amazing contributors who have both served in the role as principal, as well as students and teachers who have benefitted from having a great principal. The stories they share are truly inspiring.
As we went through the process of putting this toghether, Allyson and I were on the exact same page on what the pillars should be, but we had differing suggestions and ideas on some of the ways we can get there. Instead of deciding who was right and who was wrong, we shared our perspectives as well as the perspectives of the other contributors. Some will greatly benefit from Allyson’s ideas and hopefully, some will benefit mine.
I think this is true in schools and education as well. How can we all be headed toward the same goal, but also honor the way people, classrooms, and communities get there in a different way.
We often ask teachers to personalize learning for students and honor that learners can get to the same place in different ways and different times. The same should be true with the adults we serve. As long as we have the same big goals as a community, we can learn a lot from the perspectives and experiences of how individuals find success on that journey.
The entries I'm reading are eye-opening and crushing all at once. Add your voice to this mix here:
