#Condolences: Veteran freedom fighter and seasoned diplomat, Minister Semere Russom, has passed away at the age of 83 due to illness.

Btsai Semere joined the EPLF in 1976 and served his nation and people in various capacities with exemplary dedication and distinction for almost half a century.

During the liberation struggle, Btsai Semere served as a Representative of the EPLF's Foreign Relations Department, and later, Head of Intelligence Services in the EPLF Office in Khartoum.

After independence, Btsai Semere was appointed as the First Secretary of the Provisional Government of Eritrea (PGE) in Sudan from 1991-1992; Director General for the American Desk in the Foreign Office from 1993-1996; Eritrea's Ambassador to the US from 1997-2003; Governor of Central Region from 2003-2006; and Minister of Education from 2007 until 2025.

Minister Semere Russom was also appointed and simultaneously served as Eritrea's Ambassador to Ethiopia from 2018 - 2025.

What a great way to start the day.

I had the pleasure of visiting Marsh Avenue Expeditionary Learning School (MAELS) in Staten Island to engage students in a discussion on "Global Citizenship and the Role of the United Nations."

The session formed part of the students' curriculum on global issues, diplomacy, international cooperation, and the work of the @UN. Students in grades 7, 8, and 9 came exceptionally well prepared, demonstrating a strong understanding of contemporary global challenges and a genuine interest in international affairs.

We discussed the structure and functions of the @UN, the role of its principal organs, and the work of the Permanent Mission of #Eritrea to the UN. I was particularly impressed by the students' thoughtful questions about #Eritrea, its history and culture, its development priorities, and its role within the @UN. The exchange provided an opportunity to discuss #Eritrea's commitment to #multilateralism, the principles of the @UN Charter, and the sovereign equality of states.

In keeping with the significance of the International Day of Dialogue among Civilizations, we also reflected on the importance of #diplomacy, intercultural #understanding, mutual respect, and constructive engagement among peoples and nations.

The visit complemented the objectives of the NYC Junior Ambassadors Program, an initiative of the Mayor's Office for International Affairs that promotes global awareness, leadership, and civic engagement among young New Yorkers.

My sincere thanks to the students, teachers, and staff of MAELS for their warm welcome, thoughtful engagement, and inspiring curiosity about the world around them. I also extend my appreciation to the Mayor's Office for International Affairs for organizing this valuable exchange and creating opportunities for young people to engage with the work of the @UN and the international community.

The future of global citizenship is in good hands.

#Eritrea's 35th Independence Anniversary will be celebrated under the fitting theme: "Our Resilience: Our Guarantee".

The mantra is indeed a perfect epitome for the odyssey/historical trajectory of two Eritrean generations - the Yikaalo and Warsai generations - who had to summon and display unparalleled heroism and resilience and who were compelled to pay, in the process, precious sacrifices to ascertain and later protect their inviolable rights of decolonization and nationhood.

Indeed, the small nation had to endure and suffer under stifling and over-arching geopolitical calculus of major powers in the 1940s to be entangled in a bogus "Federal Arrangement" that soon degenerated into blatant annexation; conduct Africa's longest armed struggle for liberation after all its legal and peaceful pleas for redress were utterly ignored; face, in the aftermath of independence, imposed wars of destabilization against its sovereignty and territorial integrity; and, grapple with associated hostilities including unwarranted sanctions as well as subtle subterfuges of "strategic depopulation", unremitting defamation, etc. ርዝነት ናጽነትና እምበኣር ብዝሓለፎ ከቢድን መዘና-ኣልቦን ጉዕዞ'ዩ ዝትመን!

President Isaias Afwerki met, at the Denden Guest House in the late afternoon hours today, Ambassador Hu Changchun, China's Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa.

President Isaias Afwerki re-iterated Eritrea's readiness to consolidate its constructive engagement with the People's Republic of China, stressing the imperative for a more prominent role of China in various global and regional matters in these tumultuous times of heightened turmoil and instability.

President Isaias further alluded to Africa's immense natural and human endowments and underlined the invaluable role that China is expected to play in the development and enhancement of these resources.

Ambassador Hu Changchun, for his part, expressed China's readiness to work with Eritrea to deepen the existing bilateral strategic partnership for mutual benefit as well as leverage synergetic development strategies for the joint promotion of peace and stability across the Horn of Africa.
