Social impact is tricky, as it can create an echo chamber of like-minded people. Ideally, product/service has uncontroversially positive impact. Direct social action should be through employees (time + match donations) and not company-driven.

@andrewbaisden I would have been more"selfish" - I drank the kool-aid and subordinated my own professional and personal needs to those of my teams and employers, not understanding that I was not part of a team/family, but an expendable and replaceable component in a revenue machine.

@SergioRocks This was very true in much of US enterprise software, but I think it has shifted. I was the anomaly among peer dev managers for writing code most days, but after 20+ years I am insufficiently technical to even pass the AI screen for most posted mgr roles.

My experience of small OSS projects is consistently:

Open source, closed community. (Ignore comms/PRs)
_or_
Dead, but open until OG dev returns from haitus and locks it down to refactor everything to their personal (undocumented) preference.

@the_thagomizer My most wildly unpopular change was to eliminate manual test cases in QA. I shifted expectations such that all code was reviewed and the dev owned all predictable test cases. QA focused entirely on right thing, usability, and exploratory testing. Quality skyrocketed.
