The 1951 Refugee Convention protects a refugee's right to make a living through their craft, like Sana.
75 years later, MADE51 is upholding that right, helping refugee artisans make a living doing what they love.

UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador @YusraMardini marked the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention reflecting on why its promise of protection remains as important today as ever.
World War II. Hungary. Algeria. Vietnam. Rwanda. Darfur. Syria Ukraine. Sudan. Rohingya.
From World Wars to civil wars. From crises to conflicts. For 75 years. When people are forced to flee, we must uphold The Promise of the Refugee Convention.
The Refugee Convention began with a promise: that people forced to flee would not be left without protection.
75 years later, that promise matters more than ever.
It continues to help refugees move beyond survival towards a future of rights, dignity and hope.
Grateful to meet with faith leaders from around the world as we mark the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention.
Your moral leadership and compassion are vital in protecting refugees, fostering inclusion, and reminding us that the promise of protection must endure.
In Geneva, where the Refugee Convention was signed 75 years ago, we renewed its promise today.
Faith leaders, Nobel laureates, athletes, artists, businesses, refugee advocates and many others shared one message: protecting people forced to flee is a responsibility we all share.
The right to seek safety saves lives.
75 years after the Refugee Convention, the promise of protection for people forced to flee war, violence & persecution remains as important as ever.
Until everyone is safe, we will keep showing up.

It’s been an awful, awful weekend.
Civilians were killed again in Ukraine, Gaza, Darfur — in open violation of the laws of war.
This is now so frequent that the world pays no attention.
But if we allow this to continue, our planet will become a very dangerous place — for all.
Diversity & inclusion policies are not about favouritism - they help level the playing field after generations of systemic racism & misogyny. I told @Princeton students that real equality means reckoning with history & actively addressing the injustices embedded within our system
Racism remains deeply embedded in societies & systems – violating the rights of people of African descent, despite decades of promises to end it. Reparatory justice means truth, acknowledgement & change - with people of African descent, especially women, at the centre
President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno @marechalmidi assured me today that Chad will continue to give refuge to people fleeing war and violence. UNHCR on its part will keep striving to mobilize international resources to support the response to the influx of Sudanese refugees.
Nearly 2 years into the Sudan crisis, more than 760,000 refugees have crossed into Chad seeking safety.
@Refugees continues to stay and deliver life-saving assistance.
But the needs are overwhelming—and we cannot do it alone.

From pushback to rollback, women’s human rights are under attack.
Instead of mainstreaming equal rights, we’re seeing the mainstreaming of misogyny.
Together, let’s stand firm in making rights, equality & empowerment a reality for all women & girls, for everyone, everywhere.
Women and girls make up 54% of forcibly displaced people in West and Central Africa. They remain highly vulnerable to violence and exploitation, especially in emergencies.
My colleague Mame explains how @UNHCRWestAfrica is responding. #IWD2025
Violence against women is surging as a tool of war, but shrinking funds mean less help for rape survivors: lifesaving health services, psychological support, safe houses.
Women are paying the biggest price of cuts in humanitarian aid.
Unacceptable.
#InternationalWomensDay
We are going through a time of profound flux in the world. Without rules and guardrails, we risk unpredictability, violence and chaos. We must uphold multilateralism & protect the institutions that safeguard human rights. #MSC2025
Shocked by the death in custody of a @WFP colleague in #Yemen, arbitrarily detained by Houthi de facto authorities. Our thoughts are with his family and our UN family. All @UNHumanRights, other @UN staff & humanitarians detained must be immediately & unconditionally released.
Girls belong in #STEM. Women have shaped science for centuries - driving new technologies & climate solutions. Yet many girls still face barriers to accessing STEM education & careers. We must overcome gender bias, job segregation & harassment - for STEM that benefits all.
It was an honour to offer keynote remarks at the @MunSecConf kick-off event in Berlin today.
Thank you @MSCheusgen for giving me the opportunity to speak about the security of people — from the perspective of our work with refugees — as a key parameter for global security.
