32 years after the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires, Argentina has taken a significant step toward holding Hezbollah and the Iranian regime accountable.

An Argentine federal judge has formally charged seven Iranian nationals and one Lebanese national in absentia over their alleged involvement in the AMIA bombing, which killed 85 people and injured hundreds more.

The charges were issued under Argentina’s trial-in-absentia law, allowing the case to move forward even though the suspects remain at large. This marks the first use of the mechanism in an Argentine criminal case.

The court determined that the attack was ordered by senior officials of the Iranian regime and carried out by Hezbollah, its terrorist proxy. 

For more than three decades, the families of the 85 victims have waited for justice. This latest judicial development is an important step in confronting the impunity that has surrounded the AMIA attack for far too long.
