The reason I don’t want a “Christian nation” isn’t because I’m against Christianity.
It’s because I’ve studied church history and learned about the horrors caused by the church fusing itself with the empire.
Separation of church and state helps keep Christianity Christian.
@lukestamps Those tasked with the ministry of reconcilation should not also be bearing the sword to punish the wicked. That is a conflict of mission and jurisdiction.
The Church has an unconditional obligation to the victims of any ordering of society, even if they do not belong to the Christian community.
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer
In my role as a pastor, I’m not trying to get everyone to agree on everything so much as I’m attempting to create environments where our disagreements don’t automatically become cause for disunity.
@Connor_Shack I think in truth, there may be loud minorities that even many Calvinists would take issue with, who could have informed some gross misunderstandings.
Nonetheless, "caricature" would be a bridge too far for them. Maybe "extremist" or "poorly educated," but still Calvinist.
@Connor_Shack I can definitely recognize that the system is often misrepresented,
but this quote (and I think a common sentiment among Cs) represents a "moving the goalpost" type argumentation,
as if the only true version of Calvinism is the one to which any objections do not apply.
“‘Deathwork' is a term used by sociologist Philip Rieff. It refers to the act of using the sacred symbols of a previous era in order to subvert, and then destroy, their original significance and purpose." - Carl Trueman
Honored Sir,
Since you are pleased to inquire what are my thoughts about the mutual toleration of Christians in their different professions of religion, I must needs answer you that I esteem toleration to be the chief characteristic mark of the true Church.
