ETHIOPIA — Not too long ago, when Ethiopia was the darling of Western capitals, it routinely received invitations to G7 gatherings as a supposed voice for Africa.
Those days are long gone. The spotlight has moved elsewhere, largely to Kenya and Egypt, while #Ethiopia has slipped from the VIP list to the waiting room.
Since Abiy Ahmed took power, #Ethiopia has gone from diplomatic darling to a diplomatic afterthought.
Is it because the prime minister struggles to communicate in English? Probably not. We're constantly reminded that he has a "PhD," and he seems perfectly capable of reading prepared remarks from a teleprompter.
Maybe the problem is his apparent fear of unscripted interviews with major international media. He avoids them like the plague.
Ethiopia may still be a major country, but under Abiy Ahmed, its has become increasingly easy for the international community to ignore.
