In 1930 economist John Maynard Keynes predicted his grandchildren would work a 15-hour week at most.

So where did things go wrong?

Up until the 1980s, as technology advanced and increased productivity, average working hours decreased at a steady rate.

But from then until now, this relationship has broken down.

We’ve become ever more productive thanks to huge leaps forwards in our technological capabilities (and AI is about to shoot us further forward still), yet the length of the average working week has barely changed.

We’ve lost sight of what used to be a crucial goal for all societies: to use technology as a means of creating abundance, freeing us up to spend more time following our passions, looking after ourselves, and connecting with one another.

It’s time to reconnect with that aim. It’s time to re-establish the value of free time.

It’s time for a 4-day week. ⏰
