Q7 There is a general fear of COVID-19 impact on jobs and how it'll affect those yet to find their place in digital/virtual working. However, less reliance on physical presence at work presents opportunity for some PWDs. #DisabilityDiscourse@MsSamCoope @DFIDNigeria @cid_nigeria
Q6 More analytical work needs to be done to understand the situation for PWDs in Nigeria’s COVID-19 response. Though a public health issue, there is huge space for social analysis of secondary impact. #DisabilityDiscourse@MsSamCoope @DFIDNigeria @cid_nigeria
Q5 Access to information, testing in rural and urban areas is not the same. Testing is still mostly within urban areas. Economic palliatives have had better spread, but there is no data to show how PWDs have fared. #DisabilityDiscourse@MsSamCoope @DFIDNigeria @cid_nigeria
Q3 Demonstrating the will to ensure disability inclusion is a good starting point. Improving vulnerability targeting mechanisms by expanding the social register is another. But we need disaggregated data for evidencing. #DisabilityDiscourse@MsSamCoope @DFIDNigeria @cid_nigeria
Development actors have played significant roles in awareness raising. Where economic palliatives are concerned, this is primarily a task for the state. #DisabilityDiscourse@MsSamCoope @DFIDNigeria @cid_nigeria
Q2 (c) No data disaggregation on COVID-19 testing. Same process for everyone as testing is taken to homes. With recent LGA decentralisation, PWDs may now become disadvantaged. #DisabilityDiscourse@MsSamCoope @DFIDNigeria @cid_nigeria
Q2 (a) On economic palliatives, we’ve heard statements of commitments from the custodian ministry but have yet to see instruments that assess how this has fared. #DisabilityDiscourse@MsSamCoope @DFIDNigeria @cid_nigeria
This is why disability inclusive COVID-19 response needs to be specific and targeted. PWDs cannot receive equitable service within the mainstream. Where social distance is impossible, PWDs should be handled alongside their caregivers. #DisabilityDiscourse @DFIDNigeria @MsSamCoope
Q1 PWDs are more likely to contract COVID-19 as they are physically dependent, to develop serious illness from COVID-19 due to underlying conditions and to experience more negative secondary impact as they are already marginalised. #DisabilityDiscourse @DFIDNigeria @MsSamCoope
Please follow me as we discuss the situation for PWDs in Nigeria's COVID-19 response. NOTE: All responses are my personal opinion and not reflective of DFID's position on this subject. @MsSamCoope @DFIDNigeria @UKinNigeria@PycroftC
Great news! Oxford English Dictionary @OED has added new words from Nigerian English to its dictionary. Nigerians have made a distinctive contribution to English as a global language.
