The world is facing a global #debt crisis, and behind the numbers are billions of people paying the real cost of debt.
Hear their stories and listen to their experiences in the #RealCostofDebt.
⏰Set a reminder: The first story launches on 5 May 🇦🇷
#CancelTheDebt
More & more we're hearing that #aid only makes sense if it also benefits rich countries. This is a hugely problematic rebranding exercise that dresses Global North self-interest up in the language of partnership & serves to further entrench power imbalances.

🌱 Making polluters pay
💸 Taxing the rich
🌐 Making multinationals pay their share
🔵 There is no #DebtJustice without #ClimateJustice. In the #Philippines, rebuilding from devastating natural disasters adds to the debt burden. The result? The most vulnerable Filipinos are left to fend for themselves.
For the women in Quezon City, this is the #realcostofdebt.

Rich countries are abandoning their commitments and putting lives at risk in the global South.
The future of #aid must rebalance power.
📢Rich countries can't continue to bend the rules in their own self interest.

The future of #aid is again the subject of debate, & many govs across Europe are arguing for ‘mutual benefit’, which reimagines aid to suit their self-interest over reducing #poverty & increasing global solidarity.
It doesn't have to be like this 👉https://t.co/sNgQXpkwNw
🧵/1
At the same time, the wider public in the Global North wildly overestimate how much is already being spent on aid, which governments are using to fuel public support for further cuts to already below-target aid budgets.

While @IMFNews pushes #Argentina to exploit oil & gas in #VacaMuerta to pay off its #debt, indigenous communities in Patagonia face environmental and social crises. For Aylén, this tunnel vision from Buenos Aires is part of the #RealCostOfDebt.

@martgbek With the #aid cuts, Europe is cutting ties with the #GlobalSouth. But we need to be building alliances to achieve global stability through #development cooperation.
⚠️There isn’t a lack of money, governments have no excuse not to invest in development.
@globalpolicy
❓What does the future of #aid look like?
A reset is urgently needed, but while @OECDdev continues to work within a competitive framework, collapse is inevitable.
We don’t have an absence of resources, we have a lack of true partnership. 🧵
cc. @DAC_CSORG, @DACchairOECD
True mutual benefit would work for the public good and reset the power imbalance that the current system upholds.
❗Economic transformation can also not be achieved, while the Global South continues to pay more in #debt servicing than is received in #aid.
