When you have the tax on fixed deposits (FD) according to the tax slab, what do you expect people to do? It’s easy to lecture people on moving their money from banks to mutual funds, but when it comes to reform, no one asks the government to take action. If the tax rate on FDs and recurring deposits (RD) were the same as equity mutual funds, this problem would be significantly reduced. But no, it’s easier to raise concerns over public investments in mutual funds than to actually change the tax rate on FDs and RDs.
