@BlackCatrachoBK Kamila Harris is a Black American woman. This nation is where she was born and raised.
The Black middle class is just more diverse than the community as a whole in the U.S.
Everybody’s complaining about The Bear season 3, but imo it took a turn toward millennial hipster fan service in season 2 when Carmy suddenly started dating the cool girl/Zoe Deschanel-type medical resident.
@NK_Adjei Nue is great, and Big Mario’s has a passable slice (though Cornelly is better.) I like the bibimbap on the block with Hugo House (11th Ave and Olive) and Don’t Yell At Me for boba. Din Tai Fung if you’re not afraid of chains and Uwajimaya (I-district) has something for everyone.
@EricShapiro3 It seems like a lot of the people who became very against them 10-12 years ago never went there much, but I think the reputation has shifted, generally. Also, Chick-fil-a stopped funding anti-LGBT orgs but lots of folks (like the OP) had already written them off for good.
@janecoaston The golden doodle was the Blackest dog, to us, though (cause of the curly hair! But my mom liked that it was supposed to be hypoallergenic)
@PaperWhispers He should read the essay. What I’m getting from this thread is that there is a middle class, which a minority of “Black Britons” participate in.
ZS is aware of the respectability politics thot leedurr is referring to; resting a critique of the essay on that alone misses the mark.
@TheOceanIsGay It’s a neighborhood in a small town, in walking distance to the beach. But your neighbors are all your friends, plus family you’d want to visit sometimes. And there’s a coffee shop with a barista who will tell you all about their embroidered patch collection *if you let them*.
We’re deeply saddened to hear that Maryse Conde has died. The Grande Dame of Caribbean literature, she was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize twice, in 2015 and 2023, and leaves behind an extraordinary body of work. We send our heartfelt condolences to her family.
Today @WCKitchen lost several of our sisters and brothers in an IDF air strike in Gaza. I am heartbroken and grieving for their families and friends and our whole WCK family. These are people…angels…I served alongside in Ukraine, Gaza, Turkey, Morocco, Bahamas, Indonesia. They are not faceless…they are not nameless. The Israeli government needs to stop this indiscriminate killing. It needs to stop restricting humanitarian aid, stop killing civilians and aid workers, and stop using food as a weapon. No more innocent lives lost. Peace starts with our shared humanity. It needs to start now.
“Diaspora war” one-upmanship against Black Americans is so wild when you think about everything we’ve done in this country and how often we are imitated.
Really no point in engaging with that beyond, “Wow, okay, you must not know!”
A majority of Americans now believe that — due to the horrific humanitarian disaster in Gaza — the U.S. should block new arms shipments to Israel.
I agree.
There should be no more U.S. money for the Netanyahu war machine. https://t.co/vAmE2xC4FM
