Take all the water being used by UK data centres and double it.
Then double that.
Then double that.
Then double that.
Then double that.
Then double that.
Then double that.
Then double that.
Congratulations - you now have half as much water as the UK water system loses every year due to leaks.
The only thing that has got me through my assignments this week has been The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and I'm forever grateful for your guys' service
Being the third in a threesome with a gay couple is the fucking BEST bro. Like you have the best sex of your life and then you get to hang out with Bert and Ernie for like 20 minutes afterwords
Significantly more land is used for growing biofuels than is used for solar
You can’t eat biofuels
But I never hear any complaints about that
(You can’t eat ‘golf’ either)
Rotherham, England replaced 8 miles of mowed grass with wildflowers.
They saved £25,000 in mowing costs a year and bees, butterflies, and birds showed up almost immediately.
You don’t need to wait for your city to act. Start small in your own patch:
🏡 Let your front verge or sidewalk strip go wild this spring
🌻 Toss a few native wildflower seed balls into neglected spots
🌱 Stop mowing one strip and see what shows up
📧 Contact your city government. One email from one person has started initiatives like this before
One person. One small patch. Real habitat.
Your street could be next.
We have gigantic creatures in the sea which can sing for hours and have arteries so big you can crawl through them. (whales)
We have birds that fly 50,000 miles every year. From the antarctic to the arctic and back again. (arctic tern)
We have living creatures which never get old and never die naturally. (jellyfish)
We have animals which you can force through a sieve, and they can reassemble themselves. (sponges)
We have an ancient line of animals which once had 30 or more successful species, and has gone extinct down to just one single representative, and that representative has conquered the entire world (us).
We have horrors that look just like rocks and if you step on them your whole world becomes agonizing pain. (toadfish)
We have animals who hide inside other animals, and when you eat that animal, they enter your intestines and live there. (tapeworms)
We have plants which live on other plants and never touch the ground.
There's a fruit tree that grows around another tree, and eventually kills and replaces it. (strangler fig)
We have gliding lizards, marsupials, snakes, frogs, and rodents.
What the heck do you need fairies for?
I'll vote for literally anyone, from mental Trot to boring lib to neo-fascist, that can tie Liverpool & Manchester together as one de facto city/functional economic area, linked by high-speed rail + dense, integrated tram/bus networks.
It's 30 miles distance, lads – two-thirds the length of the Central Line. One big, North-Western megacity with a 4.5-million-strong labour market, advanced industrial clusters, top universities, a massive visitor/night-time/cultural economy, a major transatlantic port & relatively affordable housing. A genuine counterweight to London in the cradle of industrial modernity.
Just. Get. It. DONE. (And onwards to a trans-Pennine high speed rail megalopolis encompassing Leeds-Sheffield-Hull etc etc. obvs.)
