I’ve spent over 30 years in the building and construction industry.

I know what hard work feels like.

Early mornings. Long days. Heat, cold, rain, dust, sore muscles, deadlines, difficult jobs and plenty of days where you just had to keep going until the work was finished.

But there’s something slightly ironic I’ve discovered over the last 18 months.

Writing Exivum is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

I’ve spent thousands of hours writing, rewriting, researching, solving problems, building characters, histories, technologies, spacecraft, planets, political systems, physics, music and an entire fictional universe where everything has to connect and remain consistent.

Some days I can work on it for hours and finish completely mentally exhausted, only to realise I’ve solved one tiny piece of a much larger puzzle.

Construction wears out your body.

Exivum wears out your brain. 😆

And somehow, after 30 years on building sites, there are days when construction almost feels like the easier job.

Almost.

But I love creating this universe.

Every difficult chapter, every rewritten scene, every equation, every piece of music, every ship and every tiny detail is slowly turning something that once existed only in my imagination into something other people can experience.

18 months in, thousands of hours behind it, and there is still so much more to build.

Apparently I never really left construction.

I just started building universes instead.
