@ChrisPalmerMD The more you eat, the more sugar you consume, the less healthy you are, the worse the growth of the negative microbiome. The microbiome affects neurotransmitters, stress, focus, inflammation, probably drives sugar and alcohol cravings too
Sorry but I do not agree at all. We need to speed up diagnosis, is really is not that complicated and detach diagnosis from medication. Over 50% of adults discontinue meds after six months, over 75% over 5 years. More alternatives like ADHD coaching need to be embraced. See my response to the disappointing and lack-lustre NHS ADHD interim review: https://t.co/x4fEwRpz8c
@DanielJHarrisUK Hi Dan, sorry but not impressed. I have over 16,000 hours experience helping over 600 adults with ADHD. Still looks like an incomplete and lack lustre response. Here is my response to the interim report https://t.co/COn6iyaHZH. I am happy to help if requested. Regards Andrew
Hi Monique, sorry to hear you troubles, that wait is crazy. The only other mechanism for support is if you are in work you should be able to get help from Access to Work https://t.co/zkFEJJ6YEY (self diagnosis is fine) which covers a few months of coaching, remarkable tablets and standing desks! The NHS has released a new report on how they plan to help adults with ADHD but it really is uninspiring. Here's my critical response to their report https://t.co/8abIjohMvH Andrew
@NHSEngland As a very experienced ADHD Coach, 600+ clients, 16K hour coaching ADHD adults - I had to grade your report with an F for fail. You clearly tried hard but did not address or understand so many ADHD issues it's quite depressing, see my response: https://t.co/COn6iyaHZH

Hi Chamath, I've coached over 600 adults with ADHD over the last 20 years, having self-diagnosed after years of searching at age 43. Please try to detach the label from the medical incompetence around it. Here's what I've learned:
- The label is a joke with less than 20% of ADHD people being hyper
- ADHD is a bucket label, like IBS. Many causes lead to dopamine challenges, so there are wide differences and many approaches to help
- Meds help some, particularly when studying as they do help with focus on boring tasks but up to 80% of adults stop taking them in the first year of trying
- Exercise helps regulate neuro-tranmitters, good nutrition, avoidance of toxins, better sleep, can ask help
- Deadlines, rewards, threats, working in teams can help
- Learning and adopting systems to better plan, break down tasks, organise work, especially with a coach can help
- ADHD is a contextual issue, so finding the right subjects to study, then jobs to perform can make life much easier. We tend towards entrepreneurship (6 times more likely than normal according to the Guardian), unplanned in the moment jobs like emergency services, highly creative and verbal roles, where out of the box thinking and eloquence shine. Most comics are ADHD.
- I have coached CEOs, successful and less successful business professionals including many IT professionals including AI experts, doctors, in banking and VCs, lawyers, and many solopreneurs.
- Most late ADHD diagnosed adults (late diagnosis is a much more common occurrence in the UK), didn't chase a diagnosis but found ADHD eventually after years of knowing their many differences from the norm. For most adults the diagnosis and awareness is far more helpful than the meds.
- ADHD rarely disappears in adulthood, but we hide and manage it better but we still procrastinate (the no 1 symptom if you ask adults), we still struggle more with emotions (particularly rejection), are forgetful and struggle with time (from punctuality to planning), are rebels who dislike authority and politics, are highly intuitive and great at seeing patterns, talk too much and joke around more, have greater issues with addiction to substances and quick dopamine fixes offered in plenty on our phones, and have lives of more trauma and turmoil from being consistently inconsistent.
Please don't dismiss your child's ADHD. No need to follow the weak medical expertise and imperfect medical remedies (still using repurposed drugs developed over 100 years ago) but do treat ADHD seriously. If you learn to understand, accept and embrace your ADHD you can be more successful and happy but you will continue to be different in many subtle and not so subtle ways. Being extra diligent in finding the right path can make a life time of differece.

ADHD & The Novelty Trap
Ever thrown yourself into a new project, business idea, or hobby with unstoppable energy.....only to feel the excitement fizzle out just as fast?
That’s ADHD in action.
Our brains thrive on novelty! We get a dopamine boost when something is fresh, new, and exciting. But here’s the problem: novelty wears off. And when it does, motivation can crash. Hard.
This is why:
🚀 We start projects but struggle to finish them
⚡ We chase new ideas instead of sticking to long-term goals
💡 We think something is wrong with us when the excitement fades
But here’s the truth:
This isn’t a flaw! It’s part of how ADHD brains work. And the key isn’t fighting it, it’s learning to work with it.
So how do we stay engaged when novelty fades?
✅ Build novelty into your work
Change up your routine, challenge yourself, add variety.
✅ Work with people
Collaboration can bring fresh energy and accountability.
✅ Make it meaningful
ADHD thrives when the work is exciting, challenging, and has real impact.
✅ Find ways to refresh the excitement
Small tweaks can reignite interest without needing to abandon the project.
ADHD brains are wired for innovation, creativity, and problem-solving. When we understand how we work, we can build careers and businesses that actually fit us.
