If you've ever been curious about the origins of the California state flag, you will find this interesting.
"The Betsy Ross Of the Bears" tells the story of California pioneer Nancy Kelsey, the pioneer woman who provided the material from which the famous Bear Flag was made. 🐻
May 3 is World Press Freedom Day 📰
A free press is essential to democracy—ensuring transparency, accountability, and access to reliable information.
Today, we acknowledge the journalists worldwide who report under pressure, face threats and continue to pursue the truth.
Using AI is not without its risks. It requires discipline. Coordinated, cross-interrogation of two LLMs provides a more accurate, intentionally redundant process to fact-check AI responses, rigorously employing a methodology of structured redundant interrogation of vast datasets.
Using AI for Investigative Journalism has proven to be a powerful research tool for identifying the hidden nexus of an ongoing attempted capture of a rural California county government, involving political architecting and "kingmaking" by the deployment of a seed funding network.
@spj_tweets Excellent discussion; appreciated the thoughtful response to my question re conflict between "Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable. Give voice to the voiceless" and "Balance the public’s need for information against potential harm or discomfort."
SPJ strongly opposes @FCC’s order calling for a review of all ABC owned and operated stations’ licenses in apparent retaliation for broadcasting content the administration does not like.

@footage@internetarchive Hey Rick! My pleasure! The Comedy Channel seems like a lifetime ago. It was. I have not seen you since "No More Road Trips?" premiered at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival. 13 years have come and gone. How can that be! Sometime in May, maybe I'll get to Santa Cruz for a catch up.📽️🎞️
SPJ stands firmly with journalists at the WHCD tonight & reaffirms our commitment to press freedom, the safety of newsgatherers & the essential role a free & independent press plays in our democracy. As the story develops, please rely on verified facts and responsible reporting.

👁️10 years after my investigation of #TuolumneCounty for having illegally sprayed banned herbicides for roadside vegetation control near domestic water wells, leading to CalEPA/DPR's investigation and levying of fines, I'm pursuing a TuCo supervisor for alleged Public Corruption.
The web is disappearing 🕳️
According to a Pew Research Center report, 26% of pages from 2013-2023 are no longer accessible.
But that’s not the whole story.

@jeremyduda@brahmresnik Thanks Jeremy. That would be great. I sure hope your publisher 'listens to the people.' I was in the AZ Republic newsroom a few days ago after attending the SPJ conference. It was very moving to see the Don Bolles tribute on the wall, and the conference room named after him.
Pam Bondi didn’t show up for her hearing today, despite our subpoena. We’re going to begin contempt proceedings. It’s time to hold these people accountable to the laws we passed in Congress.
Delayed access to public records is denial of access. AB 1821 would permit unacceptable delays. The public has a right to timely records—no delays, no excuses.
People don’t want more delays in CPRA. We urge NO on AB 1821.
On Eric Swalwell’s resignation from Congress, Gov. Newsom’s office is reviewing the situation.
Once the seat is officially vacant, the office will make an announcement re: possible special election.
