Last week on Friday ,I and other students from @kyambogou held a discussion with Hon @ObuaHamson , the outgoing Government Chief Whip about how university students can directly benefit from government programs beyond politics and promises. The conversation centered on empowering students through practical opportunities in wealth creation, innovation, skills development, and youth inclusion in national development.
It was emphasized that many students remain disconnected from programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, Youth Livelihood initiatives, ICT innovation hubs, and government-backed entrepreneurship funds simply because of limited awareness and weak linkage structures between institutions and policymakers. Yet these programs were created to uplift the very generation that carries Uganda’s future.
The discussion further stressed that universities must stop producing graduates who only seek jobs and instead nurture innovators, researchers, and job creators capable of utilizing government support systems. Students need access to information, mentorship, incubation centers, internship opportunities, and direct engagement with national leaders to understand where opportunities exist and how to tap into them.
Hon. Hamson Obua reaffirmed the importance of involving young people in the national transformation agenda, noting that Uganda’s development cannot be achieved when university students the country’s intellectual backbone remain excluded from government empowerment structures. The future demands students who are informed, skilled, patriotic, and economically empowered.
The engagement served as a reminder that government programs should not remain distant policies discussed in conferences, but practical tools capable of transforming the lives of ordinary students into productive citizens and future leaders of Uganda.
