When abuse is alleged, there is always a devastated victim. If true, the person abused; if not, the accused and their family. #falselyaccusedday 9 Sept #FAD

"There are hundreds if not thousands of men in prison who have not had a fair trial. The Criminal Justice system is preoccupied with discussing the woman as a 'victim' before conviction" - @StuartWaiton
"Everyone now knows someone who has been through a false allegation or wrongful conviction" - Marsha Sturgeon
"We were sitting in the prison waiting room and we all started to realise we were saying 'that's what happened to us too'" - Kirsty McDermott, founder of Justice for Innocent Men Scotland

An excellent interview on @BBCWomansHour with Lady Diana Brittan this morning.
More than a decade after Operation Midland, Diana’s message remains measured, dignified & focused on preventing future injustice: “I have no interest in doing anything for myself, it’s too late for my husband, but I’m very concerned that this never happens again to anyone else.”
She spoke powerfully about the damage false allegations can cause, not only to those accused but to their families and friends, & why the lessons of Operation Midland must never be forgotten.
“You could be in any community, any part of the country, urban, suburban, rural… against whom false allegations are made & with it goes the subsequent trashing of people’s reputations; I just don’t want what happened to me to happen to them.”
That is why we continue to seek recognition that those harmed by malicious false allegations are victims too, & why the lessons of Operation Midland must be fully learned.

“She was appointed head of HMP Liverpool’s IMB in January 2021, allowing her unsupervised access to the category B prison and her own set of keys”
Appointed by whom? I think we should be told

PCOSOs have long been required to take some sort of Sexual Offending Treatment Program course as part of their sentence, sometimes multiple courses just in order to 'progress'
Are embezzlers such as Peter Murrell also required to take Embezzlement Awareness courses?
@theSNP
Well well Quelle surprise … NOT. Rewind 30 years to unethical research & unlicensed drug use on vulnerable babies & when it all goes wrong & babies die, blame the mother using MSbP. Well trodden path this one. #lucyletby

Jeremy Bamber is the only prisoner serving a whole-life order in the UK to have maintained his innocence from the outset
Now, just as Starmer's justice system bans him from talking to the media following New Yorker and other coverage, comes a new C5 documentary

41 years in jail protesting his innocence, now unable to communicate with the media. Remember, it’s Jeremy Bamber today and could be you tomorrow. Resisting this tyranny is obligatory.

"[R]ather than being a necessary response to rising crime rates, the expansion of the prison population has instead resulted from political will."
In the first instalment of a two-part series on the history of the prison population in England and Wales, Dr John Moore looks at how numbers halved between 1900 and 1940 before rising steadily over the next 50 years.

'Those making false allegations can rely on the process itself to punish their former partner, confident that a justice system paralysed by fear of feminist outrage will rarely act against them'

On this day in 1679, Britain passed the Habeas Corpus Act which established the principle that no citizen should lose their liberty without due process & independent scrutiny.
More than three centuries later, it remains profoundly relevant.
False allegations can destroy reputations, livelihoods & lives long before the truth emerges. In too many cases, accusation alone is treated as proof, while the presumption of innocence is eroded.
My experience during Operation Midland - & as president of @FACTukorg - showed the dangers of abandoning those fundamental safeguards. Justice depends not on public hysteria or institutional self-protection, but on evidence, fairness & due process.
The principles underpinning Habeas Corpus were hard won. They exist to protect every citizen from the abuse of power & the consequences of untested allegations.
"Very often we're in a he-said-she-said debate, and that's difficult for convictions."
Political commentator @DavidGauke tells @CathyNewman rape conviction rates remain a difficult challenge for courts, but there have been improvements in the process.

Issues at Long Lartin prison revealed by @_Imbs_: cells on four wings lack running water; the in-patient unit is unsuitable for people requiring mental health care, education cuts have affected wellbeing; and there is insufficient work to keep people occupied.

My sincerest thoughts with the genuine victims John Worboys.
However, those who make allegations of rape should not be automatically believed - to do so inverts the principle of innocent until proven guilty.
Allegations should be taken seriously, investigated expeditiously & tested.
Three former Married At First Sight UK contestants have alleged they were sexually assaulted while on the show.
The Met Police are encouraging 'anyone who believes they have been a victim of sexual assault' to contact them, in light of these allegations.
