Great day for engaged students at UMS in 8th grade science classes…it is Crayfish Dissection Day! Mr. Weisman guided students (his drawing helped) in the dissection process. Students were all in while trying to correctly label different bodily parts of the crayfish!
March Madness at the Hawks’ Nest…means the lesson on grasshopper dissection for our 8th graders. Students use their brand new Stereo microscopes to view their grasshoppers. I enjoyed spending time viewing a compound eyeball. Love the hands on learning! @FCPSWeismanUMS
WHOA…you never know what you will find going on in the hallways of the Hawk Nest. Today our 7th grade scientists are discovering the difference between kinetic and potential energy. BTW, those are student made catapults!
Hands on learning with student centered lessons equals engaged and self motivated Hawks at the U! Our Hawks are transferring their knowledge of conduction, convection & radiation into building their own coolers. Which team will be able to keep their ice cubes frozen for 24 hours?
Great lesson created by the UMS science department focusing on friction! Classes were divided into teams to compete in a game of curling. Some banana peels on the bottom of the chairs helped to ensure a smooth ride. And here is the 1st “throw”! That was 2 points.

I always enjoy trying new labs out in seventh grade science. Students completed a lab combining copper (II) sulfate and aluminum to observe the chemical reaction. We also got to run the new Vernier LabQuest 3s that @UMSHawks got for us! A good sendoff for the weekend!
Ready to collect data on our eco-bottles. 7th-grade got to explore the outdoors and collect samples to build ecosystem models showing the transfer of energy between abiotic and biotic factors. Thank you @mrskaveney for joining our efforts! We built some interesting ecosystems!
It’s Maryland Blue Crab dissection day in the Hawk Nest. Are those Male #1s? Our Hawks are learning that dissecting blue crab does take more than just a mallet, Old Bay & butter. Thanks @FCPSWeismanUMS for preparing this for our UMS students!

Thanks to our 8th grade science teachers Mr. Weisman & Mr. Gaines, UMS has 150 students enrolled in Algebra Based Physics for 9th grade...the highest level of science a freshman can take. It all begins w/ lessons they design to incorporate experiments that are student driven!
It is hard to believe that three years ago I started the Vanguard program. I learned a lot over this time. The knowledge I gained came in handy more than ever this year! Looking forward to what comes next. #FCPSVanguard
