Kitase says Sephiroth doesn't believe what he's doing is evil. He believes he has a great destiny to change the world.
-Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Summoning A Masterpiece interview
Cloud Strife, Barret Wallace, Tifa Lockhart, Aerith Gainsborough, Red XIII / Nanaki, Yuffie Kisaragi, Cait Sith / Reeve, Cid Highwind, and Vincent Valentine are all amazing characters, each and every one of them, without a single exception 🥹

During Final Fantasy VII's development, Barret Wallace's original name was "Blow" (ブロウ). It seems that despite having a gun grafted onto his arm, he also wielded a second gun in his hand.
Concept art sketches for Cloud's outfit for the Wall Market section of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth perhaps better mimic his model from the original Final Fantasy VII game, with a purple dress and red sash.
Character profiles from the official strategy guide of Dirge of Cerberus, including Hojo, Cloud, Tifa, Barret, and Cid.
This strategy guide refers to the Planet as "Gaia" - a name not used directly within FF7 titles themselves, but often used in promotional or side materials.
Final Fantasy X's scene of Yuna and Tidus at Lake Macalania was homage to Final Fantasy VII's Temple of the Ancients.
(We might speculate the text meant the Forgotten Capital, which features a lake with a similar mysterious ambiance that the characters enter in an iconic scene.)
"It's all Greek to me!" -Bugenhagen
Does Greek even exist in the Final Fantasy VII world?
...It seems it does. In the Speed Square, where players can board the Shooting Coaster, the Greek word "ρανκινγ" is written on the rankings board.
In perhaps homage to FF7's strong engagement with Norse mythology, #Tifa's armguards in #FF7Remake are etched with premodern Germanic runes. It appears to be the Elder Futhark alphabet.
The writing itself, however, is gibberish and some of the letters are flipped or distorted.
A Texas-themed bar? Korean BBQ? A Blue 'Hawaiian' drink and "Long Island" ice tea? It's all "Greek" to me?
Real world location references are scattered throughout Final Fantasy VII.
According to Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, Aerith begins wearing her choker (the black string tied into a bow that she wears as a necklace) as a symbol of her determination to move forward after parting ways with someone very special.
Zack... Sunflower?
When Nomura discussed assigning Zack the surname "Fair" for Crisis Core, he mentions traces of an older idea can be found in the sunflower design of his swimsuit. Zack's fanclub's secret informant "Black Suit" (Cissnei?) describes his "sunflower smile."
What did the Ancients dress like? Concept art of Cetra fashion (as used in Shinra's mako promo video) appears in the Final Fantasy VII Remake Ultimania.
