📊 Shea Charles, data report
One of the most well-rounded u23 midfielders on the planet.
- contributes in the final third in terms of shots and chances created
- also deeper when out of possession via shot blocks and interceptions
- also above average in terms of on-ball contributions, like passing to just about every depth/angle, and progressive runs
- and he's top quartile among T9 midfielders for aerial duel volume and success, which is great for a u23 player
If you look at how he was used last year, vs. the Southampton team medians, his contributions were stronger felt in more deeper-lying midfielder aspects, like progressives and fwd passes, rather than dribbles or penalty area entries (both above average, but P89 for f3rd entries and P62 for penalty area entries, just as an example).
This season at Fulham, he's also BY FAR the T5 leader for interceptions among midfielders, like multiple standard deviations above the average.
My assessment of him is that he's going to do a job at whichever midfield role is needed.
Fulham has had a poor start to the league, and even though he plays alongside Sander Berge, he needs to cover deeper defensively.
He could play in a side where they see more possession and has that holding midfielder behind him, so he can be a true box-to-box.
I think he could also even be the deepest lying midfielder if needed.
The reply I'm quoting is to a post I made about u23 players off to hot starts in my models for positions, and I listed Charles under the ball winning midfielder segment, rather than box to box.
I think this is a product of his current situation, but I'd also want to clarify that ball winning =/= no. 6, and box to box =/= no. 8.
In truth, those might be a bit misleading... I call the two positions "midfield thunder" (ball winner) and "midfield lighting" (b2b) as the actual labels. The two models are meant to encapsulate responsibilities, not positions.
I think he's going to be one of the most sought-after midfielders by "top 6" PL teams by summer 2028.

Shea Charles is an outstanding talent.
So complete...
He reads space before receiving, dropping into build-up pockets to link defence to attack, using sharp vertical passes and progressive carries to break mid-blocks.
Dominant body control on the turn, elite ball-shielding, and genuine vertical drive. Coming off a clutch match-winning performance tonight.
High-ceiling #6.
