2024 certainly had its ups and downs, but overall, it has been one of the best years that I have had in a very long time. My law firm had its best year ever. I’ve gotten myself into good shape, although there is certainly room for improvement. Jackie graduated from beauty school, and Sly is doing well at UiC. Lilly is doing fantastic at NNHS. And I have been privileged to enjoy the company of my children, brother Gerhard, and many friends throughout the year.

There have certainly been challenges…for example, my change in political affiliation appears to have caused a rather precipitous drop in Facebook friends 😭 And, of course, there were the usual inconveniences that everyone experiences - car breakdowns, issues at the house, client issues, dates that went sideways, minor and not so minor illnesses, etc. etc. Importantly, I learned that gatherings of divorced men do not go well with alcohol - EXTREMELY DO NOT RECOMMEND. However, all of the negatives that I experienced this year are the type of issues that, when I step back, seem to be about the same year after year, so I have learned to more or less ride them out. And they were certainly drowned out by the positives of 2024.

Looking towards 2025, I must admit, I am a bit less optimistic than I was last year. 2025 is not an election year - rather, it is the year following an election year. A consequence year so to speak. And there are a lot of consequences on deck. The Government of Germany has fallen, France and the UK are hanging by a thread, and Canada seems set to go as well. The rightward shift in attitudes will, at least to my eye, lead to a period of chaos throughout the western world. Many people seem to think that this rightward shift has already run its course - I must disagree. The leftward trend that started in the early 90s in the western world continued for thirty years, and massivley disrupted the power structure that existed in the west at the time. So I think the rightward shift will be ongoing for a good time longer, and, as with previous shifts, is likely to upend many existing power blocks. That creates enormous chaos. And, while chaos will certainly create many opportunities, while it is unleashed, it tends to not be great for anyone, and can be life altering - in a bad way - for some. I certainly hope I am incorrect on that front.

In any event, I think the period of chaos will be fairly short. And, of course, there is very little that any of us can do to influence this, and it does no good to worry about anything that we cannot influence, other than to plan for the same if it is likely to effect you. Rather, I intend to focus on the positive in the year to come, and there should be plenty. I expect small businesses - like my own - to do very well given less regulation. I expect that the US economy, after a bit of a rough spot in 2025, will absolutely catch fire and many - especially those in the lowest income rungs - are going to do fantastic. And there will be some interesting legal developments - especially in IP - in 2025. On the legal front, at least in Federal Courts - things are moving in the right direction. Recent rule changes make it easier for parties to argue against ridiculous discovery requests, and, overall, the litigation process is actually improving.

And, of course, I will have another year to spend with my friends and family. All told, I have a lot to look forward to both personally and professionally in 2025. I hope that all of you do as well.
