Case 1: MS (general surgery) student at a government medical college in Madhya Pradesh, whose father was hospitalised following an accident. Despite the genuine need for leave, the student was threatened by seniors to either provide a substitute or resign. He resigned and deposited Rs 30 lakh as seat-leaving bond.

Case 2: A female student enrolled in MD (paediatrics) at a government college in MP for faced mental harassment and gruelling 36-hour duty shifts without rest. She wanted to resign mid-course, but the college demanded the surety amount. Her father wrote to the PM on this issue.

There are many instances like these where students want to leave their course in between, but due to the heavy seat-leaving penalty, they are not able to do it, which leads to mental health issues.

I hope this seat-leaving penalty will be removed soon, which can prevent and reduce the incidence of suicide among PG students.
