China's CXMT to Mass-Produce 12-High HBM3/HBM3E Next Year… Closing In on Korea
China is pushing to mass-produce 12-high HBM just three years after entering the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market. This is the highest stack count currently commercialized, suggesting China has secured the technology for mainstream products led by Korean companies. The consensus is that China is emerging as a new threat, narrowing the technology gap year by year.
According to industry sources on April 8, China's largest memory manufacturer CXMT is set to begin mass production of 12-high HBM next year. The company is reportedly in discussions with domestic and foreign materials, components, and equipment suppliers on capital expenditure plans.
An industry insider familiar with the matter said, "CXMT is entering mass production of 4th-generation 'HBM3 8-high' this year while simultaneously beginning full-scale discussions with partners for 12-high HBM production. Technology upgrades and equipment investments for DRAM stacking will follow."
12-high is currently the highest stack count for HBM mounted on AI semiconductor chips, with the majority of market supply being HBM3E 12-high. SK Hynix, Samsung Electronics, and Micron hold market share in that order. HBM4 — which Samsung began mass-producing in February (with SK Hynix and Micron also pursuing supply) — is also initially being supplied as a 12-high product.
HBM increases bandwidth (speed) by vertically stacking DRAM, and the number of layers stacked serves as a key measure of technological capability. The technical difficulty of attaching micro bumps (solder balls) to connect upper and lower DRAM layers and bonding them without error is high. Thermal management after stacking is also required — this is why yields (the ratio of good units) drop when manufacturing DRAM into HBM.
CXMT's moves are evidence that it has resolved these technical challenges to a certain extent. Notably, the gap with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix has narrowed further. CXMT began mass production of 2nd-generation 'HBM2 4-high' in H2 2024. At the time, the technology gap was considered large, as SK Hynix had already entered mass production of HBM3E 12-high.
However, the situation is reversing as CXMT challenges mainstream 12-high mass production roughly three years after its full market entry — it has already caught up to within striking distance of Korean HBM. The industry consensus is that the Korea-China HBM technology gap has shrunk to three years or less.
CXMT's rapid rise is attributed to Chinese government subsidies and domestic demand. While yields remain lower compared to Korean manufacturers, the company is expanding production volume rather than focusing on yield improvement, growing its market influence. As influence and supply increase, technology and yields will inevitably improve as well.
CXMT is reportedly converting 20% of its total DRAM production to HBM this year — approximately 60,000 wafers per month — targeting demand from Chinese AI chip companies. The company also plans to raise $4.2 billion through an IPO this year to expand next-generation DRAM and HBM production lines.
Another industry source said, "For Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to widen the technology gap further, they will need to preemptively secure next-generation technologies such as 16-high HBM and hybrid bonding."
Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are expected to complete development of 16-high HBM as early as the end of this year.

🚨🇺🇸 BREAKING: PENTAGON DEPLOYS 700 MARINES TO L.A. PROTESTS
The U.S. Northern Command just sent 700 Marines from Twentynine Palms to Los Angeles, joining 2,100 National Guard troops already on the ground to protect federal property and immigration agents.
The Marines from 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines are armed with standard weapons and trained in crowd control and de-escalation tactics.
Their mission: safeguard federal facilities and personnel, including ICE agents, as protests intensify over Trump's immigration enforcement surge.
This marks a significant escalation in federal response to civil unrest in LA. Active-duty military joining National Guard signals the administration's determination to protect immigration operations despite local resistance.
The Marines are moving from the California desert Monday, bringing federal muscle to a city already on edge over deportation raids.
