Our landlord’s lawyer showed up this morning with a letter announcing a 150% rent increase. From ₦800,000 to ₦2M😭

And the instruction?

“Anyone who isn’t willing to pay should pack out. Effective immediately.”

No negotiation.
No consideration.
No concern about how people are supposed to raise that kind of money overnight.

Just pay up or leave. 💔

Imagine waking up in your own home and suddenly being told that staying there now costs 150% more.

Where exactly are tenants supposed to find the money?

And even if you can afford the increase, finding another house, paying an agent, legal fees, caution fees and moving expenses isn’t child’s play.

At this point, are we paying rent or working to maintain a landlord’s lifestyle? 😭

Landlords have their rights, but tenants have lives, families and financial responsibilities too.

How is anyone supposed to plan their life when the cost of having a roof over their head can change this drastically?

My neighbour and I share the same prepaid meter, but we each have our own card reader.

A while ago, I noticed something strange.

Sometimes, my card reader would show that I had consumed 10 units, but the main meter would show 20 units.

At first, I thought it was a meter issue. But then I noticed something else.

My neighbour’s card reader hardly recorded any units. Meanwhile, this man enjoys light almost 24/7 with different gadgets running in his apartment. 😂

I confronted him several times. Every time, he would tell me there was nothing wrong with his connection.

And because I didn’t want problems with my neighbour, I decided to just pay the difference whenever there was a shortfall.

I didn’t think too much about it. Until yesterday.

I was discussing electricity with another neighbour when I mentioned how much I had been spending.

Then he casually said: "Wait… aren’t you supposed to be enjoying free light like us?”

I was confused.

He continued: "There’s a way we connected the light from your neighbour’s apartment, so our meter doesn’t read. We only switch back whenever we notice NEPA people around.”

I just stood there. What?

So all these months I’ve been paying extra because other people were bypassing the meter?

I’ve been spending over ₦120,000 extra in four months on electricity that I thought was simply a difference in consumption.

And apparently, some people have been enjoying the same electricity without their usage being properly recorded.

I’m yet to confront my neighbour because I’m still trying to process everything.

But honestly… If you were in my shoes, what would you do?

Confront him immediately?

Demand my money back?

Or report the entire connection and let the authorities investigate? Because at this point, I’m not just angry.

I feel like I’ve been subsidising somebody else’s electricity bill. 😭
