A £30m investment plan aimed at supporting the reopening of Doncaster Sheffield Airport has been given government backing.

Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said on Wednesday that she supported the move by South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard, who has said that reopening the airport will support 5,000 jobs, boost the economy by £5bn and provide wider benefits of £2bn by 2050.

The airport was opened on the site of a former RAF base south of Doncaster in 2005, but closed in 2022.

Since then, South Yorkshire political leaders and business groups have campaigned to reopen the facility as a keystone of wider development plans for the region.

In January, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the Government would back the reopening of the airport as South Yorkshire Airport City.

Doncaster Council has established a wholly-owned subsidiary called Fly Doncaster and secured Munich Airport International as its strategic partner to support the re-establishment of operations over a number of years.

The Ministry for Housing and Local Government said on Wednesday that the investment announcement will enable the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) to use its devolved funding to invest in critical infrastructure.

Angela Rayner said: "If we are to really grow our economy and put money into the pockets of working people, regional growth needs to be hardwired into the decisions that we make.

The Chancellor announced full support for our airport.

We've had an adjournment debate by Lee Pitcher in parliament on the economic contribution and benefits that a reopened DSA will bring. The Aviation Minister Mike Kane offered full support.

In prime ministers' questions, Sally Jameson asked the PM for support to get our airport reopened. Kier Starmer offered full support

John Healey came to Doncaster for a Doncaster Chamber event. The airport was a topic of conversation, with support for the reopening.

This week, we've had Munich Airport MD and directors at DSA, along with the consultants FP Airports and the City of Doncaster Council.

The airspace was mentioned a few times.

I do know that in parliament last week, the DSA Action Group (mps from our region set up to champion our cause in government) met with the Department for Transport. With some mention of the airspace.

Now I'm still banging the drum about the petition to #saveDSAairspace.

Over the last 2 and a half years, we have had over 179,000 people sign petitions join the group, participate, or follow our social media accounts,
This is unprecedented. Most campaigns for airports are to restrict flights or operations.

The Work We have All done on here and other accounts liking, sharing, commenting, etc. has made a big difference to what's happening with DSA.

I'm told we do have an opportunity to still make a difference.

Please sign and share the petition to reinstate our Airspace when needed.

The secretary of state for transport Heidi Alexander MP has an opportunity to call in the decision on the airspace and allow full reinstatement when all the relevant qualifications and certifications are in place
