We were taught in school that Mahatma Gandhi returned his Kaiser-i-Hind medal awarded by the British to protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The reality is somewhat different. In his letter of August 1920 to Viceroy Chelmford, Gandhiji wrote that he returned this and other medals "in connection with the Khilafat movement" of August 1920. Gandhiji wrote: "Valuable as these honours have been to me, I cannot wear them with an easy conscience, so long as my Mussalman countrymen have to labour under a wrong done to their religious sentiment." Jallianwala Bagh was "an additional cause for grave dissatisfaction". The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place in April 1919. Gandhiji returned the medals in August 1920. So, the time gap in itself demonstrates that the returning the medals was not directly linked to the massacre. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Spare the parents
After the reaction to my two posts, I thought I might as well write this too since some accused me of bothsidism. Not because Ranveer is the bandar today but because some need to understand that comedians are not the lines they say. They say things that they believe are funny and hope the audience finds them funny. These lines are written. Rehearsed and delivered. They are responsible for the joke's success or failure. Not for the joke itself. It was Allahabadi's joke. He is a fool to have uttered it. Jokes are not uttered. They are delivered.

Ranveer said the most outrageous thing he could lay his hands on. Somebody gave it to him. He didn't write that shit. But even if he had written one, it doesn't mean he does what he says or wants others to do. So saying that he likes/wants to act the filth that he uttered is stupid.

Do not drag his parents into it while you lacerate him for his absolute lack of societal awareness. He is not the brightest bulb even among dimwits. If you have watched his podcasts, you know it already. If you suffered him, it is because his guests were better than him. He is paying for his stupidity, notwithstanding the apology.

Also, you can joke about anything. Yes, death, depression, violence of all kinds. Nothing is out of bounds. In fact, comedy is at its best when it tackles taboo. It eventually has a positive effect on society. Some of the best in the art became the best because they could make people laugh at things people never thought they could take lightly. The insult comedy genre, not my favourite, has its own place. There is consent, and it shows how the best are ready to hear the worst. It's not the expletives, it's the wit between the lines.

Not just here but anywhere in the world, you gotta be ready for a response/reaction. If you have the intellect, skills and delivery, you will be surprised by the laughs you get. If you don't have the necessary intellect and delivery skill to go where few dare, you will hear the silence, and worse. Jump into a river only if you know how to swim.

P.S. Our culture had this "roast" in our folk songs at weddings. Even vulgarity has its place of pride in places. But more on that later.
