I don’t want to hear a single word about a 48-team World Cup ruining football ever again.
This World Cup is better than any other 32-team World Cup that has ever taken place. The amount of chaos and emotion on display is simply unprecedented. An absolute masterstroke.
What happened in the Portugal vs. Croatia game today was one of the most obvious World Cup match fixing dramas you could ever watch.
Imagine Portugal were losing to Croatia, who had an amazing second half and completely dominated the start of it. It got so bad that Roberto Martínez didn’t know what to do, and it looked like the game was slipping away from him.
Then Cristiano Ronaldo scored the equalizer, but it was ruled out because he was offside by the smallest of margins.
Martínez completely lost it. He took off Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, and João Cancelo, then brought on Gonçalo Ramos to play alongside Ronaldo as a second striker.
Portugal then won a penalty, and Ronaldo scored it. Martínez went even more defensive after that, taking Ronaldo off and bringing on Rúben Neves to add more balance in midfield.
Then, in the 94th minute, Gonçalo Ramos scored the winning goal. Croatia thought they had equalized in the 103rd minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside that only the referee and var room saw.
Portugal held on to win.
The referee and FIFA were on Cristiano Ronaldo’s side today. Football was really kind to him. ❤️
Jamie Carragher on Croatia's World Cup exit after their last-minute equaliser against Portugal was ruled out by the referee and VAR:
🗣️ “I feel absolutely heartbroken for Croatia. They've just been knocked out of the FIFA World Cup, and instead of everyone talking about their football, we're talking about another VAR decision.
For me, the referee and VAR have become the biggest story, and that's a problem. If you need endless replays, frozen frames and lines across the screen to rule out a goal of that magnitude, then it simply isn't a clear and obvious mistake.
Croatia believed they had produced one of the greatest moments in their football history. The players celebrated, the fans exploded, and then everything was taken away in seconds. That's devastating. Those are scars that stay with footballers forever.
This is exactly why so many people are frustrated with VAR. It's supposed to eliminate obvious errors, not decide World Cup knockout matches by the smallest possible margins. Football is losing its emotion because officials are searching for perfection instead of applying common sense.
I genuinely believe Croatia have every right to feel robbed. They fought for every ball, they earned that moment, and in the end, it wasn't Portugal who broke their hearts it was the referee and VAR. That's a terrible way for a World Cup journey to end.”
Zlatan Ibrahimović blasts the referee and VAR after Croatia's last-minute goal against Portugal was ruled out:
🗣️ “That is daylight robbery. Absolute daylight robbery. Don't tell me football is better because of decisions like that. The referee and VAR have stolen the biggest moment of Croatia's World Cup.
If you need five minutes, endless replays, slow motion and lines drawn across a screen to find an offside, then it isn't a clear mistake. The referee has hidden behind VAR instead of having the courage to make a football decision.
Croatia earned that goal with heart, courage and belief. They celebrated, millions celebrated with them, and then a group of officials sitting in a room erased all of that. That's not justice that's killing the emotion of football.
This is the FIFA World Cup, not a science experiment. Fans don't travel across the world to watch officials freeze frames and measure millimetres. They come to witness unforgettable moments, and tonight one of those moments was stolen.
I don't blame Portugal I blame the referee and VAR. Croatia deserved to have that goal stand, and instead they're going home wondering how football's biggest tournament ended with the officials becoming the main characters. For me, that's one of the worst VAR decisions you'll ever see.”
Nicky Butt blasts the referee and VAR after Croatia's last-minute goal against Portugal was ruled out:
🗣️ “That is an absolute disgrace. I don't care how many times they replay it if you need to spend minutes drawing lines and zooming in frame by frame, then it isn't a clear and obvious error.
The referee has completely lost the feel of the game. This is a FIFA World Cup knockout match, not a laboratory experiment. Croatia earned that moment through courage, belief, and determination, and it's been ripped away by officials sitting behind a screen.
Football is supposed to be about passion, emotion and unforgettable moments. Instead, we've got players afraid to celebrate because VAR might find a toenail offside. That's not the game I grew up watching.
I feel absolutely devastated for the Croatian players. They thought they had kept their World Cup dream alive, only for the referee and VAR to crush it within seconds. You don't recover from moments like that easily.
If that's the standard we're setting, then football has a serious problem. For me, the officials have stolen one of the greatest moments of this tournament, and Croatia have every right to feel furious.”
🚨Thierry Henry on Portugal being awarded a penalty after the VAR review:
🗣️ “I can't believe they've given that. For me, that's never a penalty. If that's enough to win a penalty in a FIFA World Cup knockout match, then we're setting a dangerous standard.
Croatia have defended brilliantly for most of the game, and now all of that hard work could be undone by a decision that I simply don't agree with. Football is a contact sport every bit of contact isn't a foul.
VAR was brought in to correct clear and obvious mistakes, not to manufacture penalties. The referee had a perfect view of the incident, yet after one trip to the monitor, he changes his mind. That's exactly why so many people are losing confidence in VAR.
If Portugal score from this, Croatia will feel they've been punished by the officials rather than beaten by football. Decisions like this can change the entire tournament, and for me, they've got this one completely wrong.”
A clear video footage showing that the Croatian striker never touched the ball.
They are trying their possible best to gift Ronaldo a World Cup title. 😂
Referee is extremely one-sided. Every 50-50 where a Portugal player falls is a foul, while nothing is given when it happens to Croatia. Now they won't say "FIFA is helping Ronaldo" 😂
I don’t think the referee has been fair to Croatia.
He lets a level of physicality when it’s against Croatia, but when Croatia applies that physicality, he blows his whistle asap.
First FIFA World Cup goal - Penalty
First World Cup knockout goal - Penalty
First ever La Liga goal - Penalty
First ever Saudi league goal - Penalty.
I’m supposed to believe Messi is the one favoured by FIFA 😂
