Early in my career, I tried to impress clients with fancy dashboards, layered models, and detailed forecasts.
Then I realized something:
Founders don’t want to be impressed. They want clarity. They want to know what the numbers mean and what to do about them.
If you can provide that, you’ll become hard to replace.
A lot of finance pros try to LOOK smart with jargon and complex dashboards.
If you want to actually BE smart, explain complex things simply.
That’s what earns trust AND drives action.
Blackstone buying houses makes rents more affordable because their cost of capital is lower than your mom and pop landlord. They are also better operators, maintain properties extremely well, and sell them back into the market to recycle capital.
Further, they are cost sensitive and almost never the highest bidder
A colleague asked me how to compensate CFOs.
I said: 'I don’t really f*cking know. But here’s how I do it.'
After 3 years & 100+ clients, I’m still learning.
I don’t have all the answers. I just test, adjust, repeat.
Could it be better? Probably.
But it’s worked so far.
After 15 years of budgeting, I just created my first AI-powered budget.
Well, technically, the AI tool did it for me.

Here are the 7 steps I followed:
1. Prepare your data
2. Select an AI tool
3. Make a good prompt
4. Get the first draft and review
5. Give a new prompt for correction and repeat
6. Check the final version
7. Ask for visuals
