Holiday seasons are times of celebrations, parties & having fun, but they are also periods when many fatal crashes occur. Increased #alcohol consumption 🍾🍻🍷 combined with congestion & distraction on the roads, often results in more injuries & fatalities https://t.co/mKnVFqVhu3
Things you can do to help keep you and your family safe while out and about over the holidays:
1⃣Always wear a seat-belt 🚗
2⃣Restrict alcohol use ❌🍻
3⃣Wear a helmet ⛑
4⃣Watch your speed ⛔
5⃣Avoid distractions 📵
6⃣Be a road safety champion 🏆

6 out of 10 deaths on the roads could be avoided if a seat-belt is worn. Every passenger in the 🚗 should buckle up for every trip – no matter where you are going or how short this trip is.

DYK: WHO recommends age-appropriate child restraints for children under 4 years and booster seats for older children up to ten years of age or 135 cm tall.

#Alcohol is a leading risk factor for injuries & should never be mixed with road travel . Even low levels of alcohol consumption are associated with majorly increased risks – whether you are on foot, on two wheels or four: 🚙🏍🚚🚲🚶♀ 👉https://t.co/mKnVFqVhu3 #RoadSafety
Remember, it is always safest not to drink #alcohol 🍻🍾🍷🍸while driving, but if you do, say within recommended limits; or best still, make sure to arrange alternative transport for you and your family. https://t.co/mKnVFqVhu3 #RoadSafety
4 out of 10 cyclists & motorcyclists' deaths could be prevented if the correct ⛑️ is used.
In many low- & middle-income countries, 🛵 & 🚴♂️ make up more than half of those injured or killed on the roads, with head injuries the main cause of death.

1 in 3 road traffic deaths occur due to excessive or inappropriate driving speed. The greater your speed, the higher the risk of a crash and the more likely it is that this crash will cost someone their life. #RoadSafety
DYK: With an impact speed of 80 km/h, the likelihood of death in a crash is 20 times what it would be at an impact speed of 30 km/h.
1⃣Slow down
2⃣Know the traffic rules
3⃣Always keep to the speed limits!

There are many types of distractions that can lead to impaired driving, but the distraction caused by 📱 is a particular & growing concern.
➡Make sure your phone is on silent & out of reach when you are on the road.

This #holiday season, remember NEVER to drink and drive. Take public transport, call a taxi or a sober friend to get behind the wheel. Driving under the influence increases the risk of a crash and death or serious injury.

HPR and IMCC FAIR have already take initiative to reduce mortality and morbidity related to road traffic accident. Your contribution is also needed. @FairImcc@RoadSafetyNGOs@Nzeyinno@rutagumba
“One death on our roads is one too many.
The WHO Global status report on #RoadSafety 2018 shows that we are not doing enough to prevent these tragedies on our roads” - @DrTedros https://t.co/zxTCH2zWYa
“No child or young person should die or be seriously injured while they walk, cycle or play.
We must return our streets to our children. They have a right to feel safe on them.” - @DrTedros#RoadSafety https://t.co/zxTCH2zWYa
"Road traffic crashes are not “accidents”.
When someone drives 🍻 and 💥, it’s not an accident
When a driver is distracted by their📱and 💥, it’s not an accident
When a 🏍🛵 dies because they’re not wearing a helmet, it’s not an accident" - @DrTedros
Lack of pedestrian crossings, sidewalks, and of separate bike lanes, as well as excessive speed increase the risk for injuries and deaths.
It is time to make walking and cycling safe
