Well done to the thousands who called on government to add Fairtrade bananas to the fruit for schools scheme. Will there now be a response from Govt? @RishiSunak@Number10press? https://t.co/y5plH49M2g
Fairtrade has launched a new risk map tool - this is an important way to understand the biggest human rights and environmental risks in some big supply chains.
To support companies in meeting due diligence duties, our Risk Map visualises the biggest human rights and environmental risks in specific products and countries.
Admitting these risks in supply chains is the 1st step to tackle them: https://t.co/GJPUBP5Nrp

@IntelectualyTal @Maestradelases1@RubenSanchezTW@OxfamIntermon@FAIRTRADE Of course, many "direct only" firms offer a good deal to farmers, it's just that each company needs to set up their own system for setting ethical objectives and monitoring their delivery - and explaining to the consumer. (4 - postscript)
@IntelectualyTal @Maestradelases1@RubenSanchezTW@OxfamIntermon@FAIRTRADE So while "direct" and "fair" trade are often seen as alternatives, they overlap as concepts and in practice. Many companies buy direct under Fairtrade certification, getting the benefit of a close relationship with the producer alongside Fairtrade's independent oversight (3/3)
@IntelectualyTal @Maestradelases1@RubenSanchezTW@OxfamIntermon@FAIRTRADE Direct trade means that the buyer is going direct to the farmer without going through an intermediary or commodity market. So this often means a close relationship and better terms of trade, though that's down to the buyer (1/-)

Certification can only form part of a company’s sustainability efforts. This is why Fairtrade engages in so many measures beyond certification.

And it was a message we pointedly delivered to government officials and private sector stakeholders: world leaders must acknowledge the critical role that smallholder farmers have in addressing climate change.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. That was the message that Fairtrade’s delegation brought to COP27 on behalf of nearly 2 million farmers and agricultural workers from around the world.
Farmers hold the key to the climate crisis – if only world leaders at #COP27 would listen.
Extreme temperatures. Devastating droughts This is the future that the world’s farmers + agricultural workers face. And it imperils the very existence of our planet’s food supply.
