Anti-Sikh hate is on the rise, with increasing attacks on Sikhs and the spread of misinformation online.
As Chair of the @AppgBritSikhs I invited Sikhs from across the UK to Parliament to meet with their MPs to discuss growing anti-Sikh hate and what more politicians can do to ensure Sikhs are free to practise their faith safely and without fear.
MPs, Sikh constituents and representatives from the Board of Deputies of British Jews all shared insights into their experiences and approaches to tackling hate crime.
It was a hugely productive session, with 30 MPs in attendance. Thank you to everyone who joined us.
A great start to the day at the Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast in Westminster Hall.
Ruth Naomi Floyd & the musicians were excellent as was the keynote speaker Clare Williams-Sarpong.
This year’s theme, “Hope for the Future” - Let’s start on Saturday with a win over Norway and then build from there…..
Yesterday I had the great pleasure of inviting soldiers to Parliament to mark the longstanding contributions of South Asians to our armed forces.
During World War II, soldiers from pre-Partition India made up the largest volunteer army in history. Soldiers of all faiths and backgrounds stood side by side, in shared valour and solidarity, fighting for Britain and the very freedoms that we enjoy today.
This history has previously been overlooked, so it was a deep honour to have the opportunity to zoom in on these stories.
Henry Nowak was brutally murdered in a senseless act of violence by Vickrum Digwa.
The Sikh community stands with Henry's family and friends as they come to terms with his loss.
We share the grief, shock and anger at his murder and stand with his family in the pursuit of truth and justice.
We urge people to not allow the actions of this one murderer to divide communities and fuel hostility towards innocent people.
Eid Mubarak to Muslim communities across the UK and around the world as Eid al-Adha begins. May this festival bring joy and peace to you and your families.
On Eid al-Adha, I send my warmest wishes to all those celebrating across the UK and around the world.
At this special time, I wish you and your loved ones peace, joy and good health.
May Eid bring comfort and inspire us all to continue standing together in the spirit of unity and mutual respect.
Eid Mubarak.
I am deeply concerned about the terrorist attack that took place today.
This is not an isolated incident. It is the latest in a spate of utterly vile attacks on the Jewish community.
I’ve just chaired an emergency COBR meeting and tomorrow I’ll be bringing together criminal justice agencies to ensure we have effective and swift justice.
Ahead of St George’s Day I was joined by interfaith leaders from across London. We came together to celebrate all that unites us and affirm the flag of St George as a symbol that belongs to us all 🏴
There are still families in East London who rely of the support and kindness of others. Our faith communities play an important role in providing that.
Today, I asked whether the Church will continue its good work across the community to provide that strong network of support.
Happy Vaisakhi to everyone in Dudley & beyond celebrating today 🌾
Honoured to join the Prime Minister at No.10 alongside fellow MPs to mark this special occasion and recognise the huge contribution of Sikh communities across the UK.
Wishing you a joyful and peaceful Vaisakhi!
To all Sikhs in Ilford South and beyond, wishing you a very Happy Vaisakhi!
Today we celebrate the birth of the Khalsa Panth.
We remember our shared values and identity as Sikhs: to live in faith, to serve and to fight injustice and inequality.
Vaisakhi diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan!
Taking part in the walk of witness in Govan today was deeply moving✝️
We acknowledged suffering, hoped for renewal and prayed for unity over division.
Wishing all Christians a blessed Good Friday.
Last month we were delighted to host a discussion on Faith and Politics in the Indian diaspora, in the House of Lords, with voices from across the British Indian faith communities. Thanks to @WarinderSJuss@KrishRaval@gsjosan@stephenctimms@Nikkived & all who joined!
The antisemitic arson attack in Golders Green is horrifying.
I’ve been in touch with Jewish community leaders this morning and will continue to do so throughout the day.
An attack on our Jewish community is an attack on us all. We will fight the poison that is antisemitism.
