Today I was glad to welcome a prominent South Indian scholar and spiritual personality Shri Swami Sriram Charana Aravinda Das Ji from TamilNadu at my home. Swami Ji was on a tour to deliver a talk at Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu, and was gracious enough to travel all along the way from Jammu to meet me. We had a good time together wherein we deliberated upon the religious and spiritual discourses in Islam and Hinduism and the common challenges that the spiritual ethos of religions is facing today in wake of post modern materialism. Thank God that people with a penchant for interfaith dialogue and broader understanding of humanity are still there residing under the canopy of heavens. Thanks Swami ji for enlightening our day with your valuable presence.

ماشااللہ یہ وقت کی اہم ضرورت ہے
Last night someone was telling me that God fearing and morally upright people are misfits vis a vis expressing themselves socially and politically. To meddle themselves in the affairs of public life is not their cup of tea. It requires Machiavellian cunningness, ferocity and ruthlessness. Those with a sense of practical religiosity must not wantonly tread here. And their only focus must be their beads and rugs of prayer. In simple words what—I thought— he was trying to tell me was that those who have a penchant for religion and morality, they have no right to express themselves politically. I was thinking how to take his sweeping comment, which was constitutionally illegitimate, factually incorrect and even religiously unfounded. At that time I could only answer him in a layman’s way provided the mindset of the person with whom I was talking to and I felt that the person was mirroring the overall mindset and the general predicament of our society as such. Only this much did I tell him:
“Whenever we seek the wedlock for our beloved children (particularly our daughters), we try to seek and confirm every detail as regards the would be bridegroom; whether the guy is of good character, whether he is decent in his countenance and behaviour, whether he has a good company of men around him, so on and so forth. But when it comes to seeking and searching for a person who may represent the community in its collective affairs, be it social or political, here we become menacingly indifferent towards our highly sought after ideals. Here we hardly care for the fact that the person who is going to represent us as a society, whether he is of upright character and disposition or not and whether his credentials for honesty and integrity are upright or not and to which company of men he is associated. Here we think, and that too most unfortunately, that only those persons are worthy of representing us who may be cunningly deceitful and whose social indicators prove them to be otherwise notorious. If we are not ready to marry our children to the immoral ones and within the families known for their un-civility, then why are we ready to handover our selves and our future generations in the hands of those who may have, on record no predilections towards high standards of ethics and morality?”
Verily democracies give us the choice to choose but our moral compass must always direct us to choose rightly as well as wisely. Shakespeare was perhaps right when he said, although in a different context that “Nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so.”
He said that Kashmiris had a dearth of trousers (Yezars) which during the yonder period was shared, a one by many. Although we know that during the heydays of Afghan, Sikh and Dogra regimes, the Kashmiri peasantry and much of the artisans (kamgaars) were living a miserable life, with hefty taxes levied against them which prevented them the boon of their own produce; a state of living which was lamented upon by Iqbal in his famous dirge
سرما کی ہواؤوں میں ہے عُریان بدن اسکا
دیتا ہے ہُنر جس کا امیروں کو دوشالہ
means: In the chilling winds of winters, his (Kashmiri artisan’s) body remains uncovered
Whose skill, otherwise bestows the rich ones with a double folded robe.
Yet, all said the usage of the phrase “shortage of trousers (Yezaar)” while depicting the plight of erstwhile Kashmiris is not a decent remark. In Kashmiri parlance, to use the phrase “someone being without a Yezaar” is a shame-facing slang which should be avoided in the public discourse and that too by a legislator. Otherwise historically speaking, Kashmiri people along with their peasantry, their fields, their rivers and their gardens were sold out by the British Raj to the Dogra Shahi for a paltry sum of 75 Lakh Nanak Shahi coins on 16th of March 1846 in the treaty of Amritsar and what could have been more painful to the Kashmiri people than this. It is to this effect that Iqbal echoed the pain of Kashmir’s misery when he said:
دہقان و کشت و جوۓ و خیابان فروختند
قومے فروختند و چہ ارزان فروختند
means: The peasant and his field and the river and the garden was sold out
A nation they sold out and how cheap they sold it out.
Even it was the plight of Kashmiris during the historian Mir Sadullah Shahabadi’s time when Afghans ruled over here and Mir, a resident of Dooru Shahabad lamented in his historical account Baharistan e Shahi as follows:
سر بُریدن پیشِ ایں سنگین دِلاں گُل چیدن است
means: For these stone hearted ones (the erstwhile Afghan rulers of Kashmir) chopping the heads (of Kashmiris) off their shoulders is just like plucking a flower from the tree.
No doubt, Kashmiri people have suffered tremendous agonies in the bygone eras but with this rejoinder that they have always protected their Dastaar(Turban) and Yezaar ((Trousers), because for a respectable people like Kashmiris their Dastaars and Yazaars mean a lot to them.
Now the words used by NC legislator were nothing but a pun hurled upon the misery of our bygone historical recollection but what now the Sanghis are doing is much more disgusting. Those who are for obliterating the memories of our Kashmiri heroes of 1931 who had fought for upholding the democratic values against an autocracy and now those who cancelled our state holiday in their name from our calendar and those who reduced our special status to a naught, their localised versions are now raising a cry for our Kashmiri identity and dignity. Have they forgotten how weeks ago they were mocking and jeering at the name sakes of Azee and Fazee, the motherly nomenclatures beloved to all Kashmiris. Their mock show of criticising the inappropriate words of the aforementione legislator is nothing but tantamount to a pot calling the kettle black.
Wasalam.
NC Leader @Majeedlarmi blames PDP’S @parawahid for growing distance between @RuhullahMehdi and Party.National Conference leaders appear to be softening their stand towards Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, with senior party leaders now stressing that he remains part of the party and that differences should be resolved through dialogue.
NC leader Abdul Majeed Larmi, who has frequently been critical of Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, today adopted a comparatively softer tone and blamed the PDP for the growing distance between the MP and the National Conference.
Larmi alleged that the differences between Aga Syed Ruhullah and the NC have been created due to PDP conspiracies and specifically held PDP leader Waheed Para responsible for the situation.

On the eve of Teachers’ day I wish health and wellbeing for all my teachers to whom I am indebted in one way or the other and I pray for the Maghfirah of those who are no more with us. My grandfather Hazrat Maulana Peer Ghulam Hassan Siddiqui (RA) and my beloved uncle Hazrat Faqeer I Millat Peer Rafi Ahmed Siddiqui (RA) have been more than teachers to me. From them I have learned many perspectives of life and being. May Allah bless all those who have taught me even a word.
Dear brother and friend Tariq Hussain Naik Sahab (Former CEO, Gulmarg Development Authority) has been posted as Registrar/Controller of Examinations for SKIMS, Soura. I wish him best of luck in upholding the high ideals of public service; wherever he goes and wherever he serves.

Dear @RuhullahMehdi Sahab, I think you are pointing towards the verse quoted above. Although this verse of Surah al Noor doesn’t come in immediate succession to the verse of Surah al Asra that has been recited by you; and comes after a gap of six Surahs in between;but the aforementioned verse provides glad tidings of Divine blessings, His Sultan (Authority) and Nusrat (Help) to those who have a firm belief in Almighty and who are righteous indeed
The literal meaning of the verse is as follows
Allah has promised among you who believe and do righteous deeds, that He will for sure grant them the inheritance in the land, just as He granted the inheritance to those who were before them; and that He will for sure establish (لیمکنن لھم) for them their way of living (دینہم), which He Almighty has chosen for them, and for sure He Almighty will change their state of fearfulness to one of security and peace (امنا) (where in) they will worship Me (Almighty) and will not associate aught with Me. And if anyone does deny after this, so they will be deemed wicked (فاسقون).
This verse is a Quranic generalisation of the fact that whenever people rise to any occasion, whether the occasion is social, political, moral or spiritual, and whenever they show a resilience on the basis of a firm belief in higher moral and spiritual principles and when ever this resilient belief is translated in to a meaningful and goal oriented action (Amal e Sualeh), then it is the law of Divine Providence to bestow upon such a people, in lieu of their faith and character, an inheritance upon the land which verily manifests the Divine will and guidance for the betterment of humanity. Thus the faithful and upright people become the via media for the betterment, elevation and prosperity of God’s creation as such. Because of their righteousness, the environs become so blessed that all fearfulness gets transformed in to an era of peace and prosperity for all. And within this blessed scheme of things all slavery is brought to a naught with the effect that none other than the creator of the Universe is worshipped, thus freeing man from worshipping another man merely on the basis of his political, social or hereditary authority.
Etymologically speaking, the Laam I Taakeed which comes recurring throughout the verse, makes this law a Divine imperative, provided the men take recourse to Imaan and Amal e Sualeh.
I sincerely believe that the political and social character which you often refer to, is duly manifested in this verse. And I hope that working according to this Divine spiritual imperative, you will always be bestowed with the choicest Nusrat and Naseer by the Divine providence. Even Allah’s Prophets too asked for a Naseer, a Wazeer or whatever we may call it, may you too find the men of character who voice resonates with that of yours.
If the verse mentioned above is not the same as was intended in your video, still people like me wish to be remembered in your duas near the Rauza Muqaddas of our Beloved and Revered Mustafa (May peace and blessings be upon him, his progeny and his companions).
Do remember us in the city of the Beloved.

The current stipend of Rs 12000 for our Medical Interns in the hospitals of Jammu and Kashmir is extremely minimal as compared to their counterparts in other states of India. These young doctors work for long shifts and often manage busy OPDs day in and day out, yet they don’t get paid according to their merits and efforts. As a matter of fact, what these young medics are demanding is not some kind of favour, but a due recognition of their rights and duties.
As responsible citizens our voices of support too must resonate with these young doctors so that they are encouraged to serve us better as a society.
₹400 a day
That is what J&K pays the MBBS and BDS interns running its emergency wards, night shifts and rural postings. Less than what a daily-wage labourer earns.
The stipend has been frozen at ₹12,300 for seven years. Odisha pays ₹44,319 for the same work.
Today they are on strike across every GMC and SKIMS Bemina, asking for ₹30,000. We need to support them.
@drsameersiddiqi@RuhullahMehdi When the voice of conscience speaks, it cannot be silenced by pressure. Accountability is the foundation of democracy, and standing with what is constitutionally and democratically right is always worth remembering. We stand with you, Aga Sahib.
Today we were blessed enough to have a glimpse of the Mooy e Muqaddas (Holy Relic) of the Beloved Prophet (SAAW) at Asaar e Sharif Dargah Khiram Hazratbal, where a sea of devotees had gathered to be a part of the Friday following Meelad congregation.

Respected @RuhullahMehdi Sahab, your answer is not only your’s. It reflects the deep seated sentiments manifested in the collective conscience of the entire Jammu and Kashmir. Your constitutionally justified and democratically upright struggle today will go a long way down the memory lane into the future to become a frame of reference for our posterity. Come what may, we are with you.
