Five Fall River residents are charged in what federal prosecutors call a multi-million-dollar sham marriage ring that allegedly helped illegal immigrants fraudulently get legal status.

Prosecutors say ringleader Jennifer Gonzalez, 43, of Fall River charged $38,000 to $40,000 per fake marriage, arranged 18 to 20 a year for over a decade, and paid local U.S. citizens to act as the “spouses.” She is also accused of collecting more than $120,000 in SNAP benefits while buying property in the Dominican Republic.

On recordings in court documents, Gonzalez allegedly admitted things got “more difficult” once Trump took office and immigration enforcement tightened, but told a customer, “this state is a sanctuary, like Trump doesn’t like this state because the government from here, the state defends us very much,” adding, “Massachusetts is the best place for you to be. That is a fact.”

Massachusetts women are driving Gov. Maura Healey’s @maura_healey commanding 25-point lead over Mike Minogue @mikeminoguema in a new poll, supporting her 66% to 24% while men are nearly evenly split. @MassGovernor

[Fall River Reporter @FallRiverReport]

In a UMass Amherst/WCVB poll of 800 registered Massachusetts voters conducted October 5–12, 2026, incumbent Democratic Sen. Ed Markey @SenMarkey holds a commanding 27-point lead over Republican challenger John Deaton @JohnEDeaton1 in the U.S. Senate race, with 56% support for Markey compared to 29% for Deaton (and roughly 9% for others or undecided in related reporting).

The survey underscores a broader Democratic advantage across statewide contests less than three weeks before the November 3 election, driven by higher enthusiasm among Democratic voters (54% “very enthusiastic” about voting versus 42% of Republicans and 24% of independents) and the persistent effects of President Trump’s @realDonaldTrump unpopularity in the deep-blue state, which has hindered GOP candidates like Deaton in a contest where Markey seeks a third full term.

The same poll showed Democratic Gov. Maura Healey @MassGovernor holding a commanding 25-point lead over Republican challenger Mike Minogue @mikeminoguema in the 2026 gubernatorial race (57% to 32%, with independent Andrea James at 6%).

A new University of Massachusetts Amherst/WCVB poll of 800 registered Massachusetts voters (conducted Oct. 5–12), shows Democratic Gov. Maura Healey @MassGovernor holding a commanding 25-point lead over Republican challenger Mike Minogue @mikeminoguema in the 2026 gubernatorial race (57% to 32%, with independent Andrea James at 6%).

Healey’s advantage is driven largely by a wide gender gap (66–24 among women versus 47–42 among men), strong support among college-educated voters, and a 58% job-approval rating—her highest since February 2025—while voters trust her over Minogue by 20–30 points on key issues including abortion, education, health care, immigration, and crime.

Minogue faces a major obstacle in that more than 80% of voters view him as similar to President Donald Trump on issues such as abortion, immigration, health care, taxes, and transgender rights, and the words most frequently associated with him include “MAGA,” “Republican,” and “Unknown.”

In the U.S. Senate race, incumbent Democrat Ed Markey @SenMarkey leads Republican John Deaton @JohnEDeaton1 by more than 25 points (roughly 56–29), and Democrats hold large leads in other statewide contests.

New Bedford, Massachusetts City Councilor Shawn Oliver has suspended his campaign for lieutenant governor, hours after he was arrested on a charge of operating under the influence early Sunday morning.

“After careful reflection, I have made the decision to suspend my campaign for Lieutenant Governor. This election is too important to be overshadowed by personal matters. I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported me throughout this journey and ask that my family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.”

Dear President Kornbluth and Chairman Gorenberg,

Yesterday, as I am sure you are aware, a Boston jury unanimously found that @MIT professor Kristin Knouse defamed David Sabatini, falsely accused him of rape and sexual harassment, and tortuously interfered with his contractual arrangements including his tenure at MIT.

MIT and its tenure review committee relied on Professor Knouse’s statements when it took away David’s tenure and terminated him.

MIT's policies explicitly prohibit harassment, retaliation, and fabrication of claims. Falsely accusing a colleague of rape and sexual harassment and pushing for his termination under false pretenses are clearly violations of MIT policy.

In light of the unanimous findings of the jury after five years of discovery, many legal motions and countermotions by both parties, and a three-week trial in Suffolk County Superior Court in Boston:

Is MIT going to take away Knouse’s tenure and terminate her?

If not, why not?

Is MIT going to restore David’s tenure, and apologize for firing him?

If not, why not?

In light of what has transpired in this grave miscarriage of justice, MIT has the opportunity and the obligation to right a serious wrong here.

At a minimum, the public deserves transparency into what actions MIT is taking in this case as taxpayers are major funders of MIT.

Sincerely,

Bill Ackman

@grok @andrewc44104127 You say “hours after the event.” Aren’t we weeks into these protests, arsons and violence?

[Fall River Reporter @FallRiverReport]

@grok @andrewc44104127 So we are back to the mostly peaceful protesting term again? How much estimated theft and damage financially has occurred since the start of the protest/riots?

[Fall River Reporter @FallRiverReport]

@grok @andrewc44104127 Protests with fires? So you are saying arson and looting are normal parts of protesting? Or is there a better word?
