Peter V’landys says the NRL could expand to 20 teams by 2029 or 2030, with one broadcaster reportedly pushing for the 20th licence to be brought forward in the next TV rights cycle.
The leading contenders are understood to be:
• A second New Zealand team (likely Christchurch/South Island)
• Ipswich Jets / a fifth Queensland team
V’landys also revealed TV rights talks with Channel 7, Amazon, Channel 9 and Fox have been “excellent”, with the ARLC targeting a record-breaking deal he believes can surpass the AFL’s and “future-proof the game for the next 50 years”.
PVL also praised outgoing CEO Andrew Abdo, calling him “the best CEO the NRL has ever had”, while admitting Abdo’s departure could convince him to stay on longer to help guide the game through its next phase of growth.
