The Federal Government has launched an emergency intervention on some of Nigeria’s most troubled road corridors after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered the immediate restoration of movement for motorists and commuters facing severe hardship.

The directive has prompted the Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, CON, to mobilise emergency teams to the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road and the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti corridor, where worsening road conditions have reportedly left motorists stranded for hours and, in some cases, days.

Umahi said President Tinubu had directed the Ministry of Works to take urgent corrective action to restore movement as quickly as possible.

“President Tinubu, GCFR, has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene and ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken to restore movement on the affected roads as quickly as possible,” Umahi said.

UMAHi MOVES INTO ACTION

In response to the presidential directive, the Minister has activated an emergency response plan, directing the Minister of State for Works to lead ministry officials to the Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti axis to assess the situation and commence immediate remedial works.

As of 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, ministry officials were already on the ground in Ekiti and Kogi States to begin the intervention.

But the Benin-Agbor-Asaba corridor has also received urgent attention.

Umahi personally travelled to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees to begin a coordinated response to the crisis on the strategic road linking Edo and Delta States.

The meeting is expected to involve representatives of the Edo and Delta State Governments, as well as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in a bid to find immediate solutions to the worsening situation.

‘WE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY’ — UMAHI APOLOGISES TO MOTORISTS

The Works Minister also accepted responsibility for the situation and apologised to commuters who have suffered prolonged delays and been stranded on the affected routes.

He assured Nigerians that the government’s intervention would not stop at temporary relief.

According to him, emergency measures are being pursued alongside permanent solutions aimed at restoring the roads and improving their long-term reliability.

The latest intervention comes amid growing concerns over the condition of key highways that serve as critical links for commuters, businesses and goods moving across the affected states.

The Federal Government says the message is clear: immediate action is now required to get traffic moving again.

Ambition, Love and the Journey to NNPC

When I first heard that there was an engaged couple among the 2026 class of NNPC Tigers, I knew immediately they were a #HumansOfNNPC story, and I had to meet them.

So, on Tiger Graduation Day, I invited Philips and Olamide to my office. I was expecting a cute story about two people who had applied to NNPC together and somehow found themselves graduating together. What I got was much better. Their story began long before NNPC.

Park that.

They first met at the Polaris Bank Graduate Intensive Training School in Lagos. Olamide remembers thinking Philips was calm, intelligent and quite easy to talk to. His first impression of her? Open and smart.

Yet, neither of them heard the faintest toll of wedding bells. Fast forward a few years and separately, both saw the NNPC Tigers recruitment announcement and applied.

Then the coincidences began. They lived far apart but were assigned to the same centre for the computer-based test. They prepared together, encouraged each other and moved on to the interview stage. Then, somehow, they were scheduled for interviews on the same day. Same panel. Same room. Out of about 1,000 candidates being interviewed daily, in batches of five.

At this point, I am thinking (out loud): Okay, NNPC recruitment process or matchmaking exercise? They laughed.

But there was something lovely about the way they told the story. There was no sense that either had expected life to unfold this way. They simply kept showing up, doing the work and cheering each other on.

Then the job offers came. Philips says he opened the email and had a light bulb moment.

“It was then I knew Olamide was my wife,” he said, smiling.

That part will stay parked…

I was curious about what they had heard about NNPC recruitment before they applied.

The familiar stories came up: you needed to know someone, the process was almost impossible, that ordinary qualified applicants without connections did not stand a chance.

This was far from their experience. Neither knew anyone at NNPC. They found the opportunity online, applied through the official recruitment portal and went through the required stages.

“I was most surprised by how structured the process was. Every stage demanded preparation, patience and high performance,” Olamide said.

Their advice to anyone considering applying for the next Tigers programme?

“Apply anyway!”

Don’t believe the hype and what you read. Do not reject yourself before your application is considered. Prepare and let the process decide whether you stand a chance.

How has their journey through Tigerdom been? In their early days in Abuja, before they found an apartment, their daily commute involved a bike from T-Pumpy Estate to Lugbe, followed by a taxi from Police Signpost to work.

“We were learning new names, acronyms and departments while trying hard to look like we knew exactly what we were doing,” Philips recalls.

Today, they laugh about it as the sweetest part of their story, beginning their careers and a life together. Judging by the way they spoke about each other in my office, I suspect this is only the beginning of an exceptional story.

Let me start with the thing nobody wants to say.

Atiku Abubakar is wrong. Bringing back the fuel subsidy is not the answer. We tried it for forty years. It made a few men billionaires, it fed smugglers at our borders, and it never once put money in the pocket of the woman selling tomatoes by the roadside. Going back to it would be going back to the same thieves.

Mr President, you have done well. Removing the subsidy was hard and you did it. You have also sent far more money to the states than any President before you. The Federal Government has done its part.

Now the states must do theirs.

And let me say this as plainly as I know how, so that no governor can pretend to misunderstand it.

Subsidising transport inside a state is the job of that state government. It is not the job of the President. It has never been his job. It is not his job today. It will not be his job tomorrow. Moving people around Ilorin is not the work of Abuja, it is the work of the Kwara State Government. Moving people around Kano is the work of Kano State. Moving people around Lagos is the work of Lagos State.

This is not my opinion. It is our Constitution. Transport within a state is a state matter. The Federal Government has no business running a bus from Ozumba Mbadiwe to Ikorodu, and it should not be asked to. In fact, since the constitutional amendment of 2023, our governors have more power over transport than any governors in the history of this republic. They are simply not using it.

So when a governor tells you the hardship in his state is Abuja's fault, ask him one question: what have you done with your own allocation?

Because that is where the money is. And that is where the responsibility is.

In December 2022, one bus drop inside a Nigerian city cost ₦644. Today it is ₦1,431. Our people are now working half the month just to pay the bus. A man who cannot afford to reach his workplace does not really have a job. A child who cannot afford to reach school does not really have an education.

So this is what I am asking every one of the 36 governors and the Minister of the FCT to do.

One. Students ride free. Every student, to school and back home, at no cost. Not discounted. Free.

Two. Nobody pays more than ₦500. From one end of a city to the farthest end of that same city, ₦500 maximum. And in our smaller cities and towns, it should be far less than that.

Three. Do not buy a single bus. Governors, please. No buses. No taxis. No boats. We have seen those vehicles rusting in government yards from Sokoto to Yenagoa. Instead, register the drivers who are already on the road, fix the fare the passenger pays, and pay the driver the difference.

Four. Pay only for trips you can prove. GPS on the vehicle, a tap card in the passenger's hand. If a trip did not happen, nobody gets paid. That is how you kill fraud before it is born.

The drivers will not lose. The drivers will get richer. Today a driver chases passengers in traffic and prays. Under this scheme he earns a guaranteed payment from the state every month. With steady income he can service his vehicle, and in time he can buy a newer, cleaner, safer one.

And our people will feel it immediately. Money that used to disappear into transport will stay in the pocket for food, for rent, for medicine, for school fees. That is a pay rise that costs nobody a job.

Now, the money. FAAC allocations to the states have exploded since the subsidy was removed from ₦2.8 trillion in 2022 to ₦7.3 trillion in 2025. Nigerians have been asking a fair question ever since: where did it go?

I am asking each state to spend no more than five per cent of its FAAC allocation on this. Five per cent. Ninety-five per cent remains untouched for everything else.

If a governor cannot find five per cent to stop his own people from suffering, then the problem in that state was never money.

Imagine, someone like Dele Momodu trying to lecture Bola Tinubu about democracy and how to be a democrat. What a comic relief! Twenty years since dog has been domesticated, monkey was still residing in the bush!!!!

Ladoja was PDP, Tinubu helped to restore his mandate. Mimiko was LP, Tinubu restored his stolen mandate. Oshiomole was brought from LP to ACN, Tinubu also restored his mandate. When PDP cabal expelled Ngige from PDP, it was Tinubu that provided him a sanctuary in the ACN. As Tinubu was helping Aregbesola and Fayemi to retrieve their mandates, he was also helping Atiku to retain his VP Mandate, and when PDP expelled Atiku from their party, it was Tinubu that provided him with another platform to cover his shame.

Tinubu the Co-Founder of NADECO leading the battle against Abacha to restore Abiola’s 1993 mandate would still not abandon Muhammadu Buhari, when he couldn’t win presidential elections three times. Tinubu led the first successful opposition parties merger in history that uprooted a ruling party. Despite all these, TINUBU didn’t hold any political office since the inception of the APC, having sacrificed his shares for others in the interest of the party and until 2023, he was politically on his own, but one with God is a majority!!!!

Tinubu, a friend of Soludo’s APGA, companion of Otti’s LP, brother of Adeleke’s Accord and Ally of PDP National Leader, Wike. Yet, he’s the Leader of APC whom some failed contestants and their Cardinal still describe as a One Party State politician!

Tinubu is the greatest Democrat of this era, a leader whose greatest strength is his limitless ability to make political sacrifice in the interest of general stability, an attribute that Atiku and Obi are bereft of!!!!!

Members of the APC Presidential Campaign Council constituted; Abdulaziz Yari to serve as DG, Uzodimma secretary

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima will serve as chairman and vice chairman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, according to the list released Saturday morning.

Party Chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda will also serve as vice chairman, while former Zamfara State governor Senator Abdulaziz Yari will serve as the director-general of the campaign.

Governor Hope Uzodimma will serve as secretary of the campaign council. APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Bashiru and Hadiza Bala-Usman will serve as deputy and assistant secretaries.

The chairman of the campaign Council, President Tinubu, will work with a body of advisers comprising Chief Bisi Akande, Chief Segun Osoba, Senator Rochas Okorocha, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and Senator Florence Ita Giwa.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abass, and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State have been assigned as deputy director-generals for the campaign in the south and the north. They will work with Senator Bamidele Opeyemi and Senator Jibril Barau in the two zones.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole will serve as deputy director-general in charge of mobilisation, while the President’s Chief of Staff will serve as deputy director-general for administration. 

James Abiodun Faleke, who played a pivotal role in the 2022/2023 campaign, has returned as deputy director-general for election planning, coordination and monitoring. 

Faleke will work with zonal directors, with Senator Olushola Adeyeye in the South West, Dr Ngozi Olejeme in the South South, Senator Uche Ekwunife in the South East, Muntaqha Rabe in the North West, Ahmed Muhammed Ketso in the North Central, and Senator Sani Danladi in the North East.

Ms Stella Okotete, Engineer Abdullahi Garba Ramat and Audu Maikori will serve as secretaries of the election planning directorate.

Muiz Adeyemi Banire will lead the legal directorate as director, with Dr Liman Hassan and Babatunde Ogala as deputies. Other members are Prince Lateef Fagbemi, former governor Ibrahim Shema, Worgu Boms and Dr Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris Malagi, will serve as the coordinating director for media and Strategic Communication, along with Dele Alake, Bayo Onanuga, and Lanre Issa-Onilu. The media directorate also includes Tunde Rahman, Sunday Dare, Daniel Bwala, and Felix Morka, who have been assigned as coordinating deputy directors.

Abdulaziz AbdulAziz will work with three others, Temitope Ajayi, Arabinrin Aderonke, and Frederick Nwabufor, as coordinating secretaries of the media directorate. Segun Dada will serve as Director, New Media, the same role he performed in 2022. Solomon Arowolo will serve as Secretary, New Media.

The campaign has also appointed five spokespersons, led by Dele Alake. Other spokespersons are Alwan Hassan, Ayobami Oyalowo, Kemi Asekun-Shittu and  Adamu Fanda.

President Tinubu has charged all council members to work tirelessly to deliver victory for the party in the January 2027 elections. He has also encouraged the leaders of the various directorates to reach out to other party members who may not have been formally listed to join their crucial efforts. 

“We have delivered on our campaign promises and set our country on a path of economic progress. We are definitely out of the dark tunnel and are now at the cusp of reaping the benefits of a prosperous economy that will benefit all Nigerians. Our discussions focused on the final steps towards the commencement of Etihad’s daily Abu Dhabi–Lagos service from March 18, 2027, and, importantly, on how we can build a broader strategic partnership around connectivity, investment, training, technology and cargo.

I also visited Etihad Aviation Training and Zayed International Airport to explore opportunities for capacity building and import other ideas from Abu Dhabi’s world-class aviation ecosystem.

TINUBU TASKS HOMELAND SECURITY ADVISER TO COORDINATE FIVE-YEAR NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT ASSESSMENT, DEFENCE PLAN

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate preparation of a comprehensive National Threat Assessment and a rolling five-year Strategic Defence Operations Plan to strengthen coordination across Nigeria’s defence, intelligence and security capabilities.

The President's Special Adviser on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa, will coordinate and provide secretariat support for the nine-man committee the President constituted to draft the strategic defence operations plan.

Other members of the committee are the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa; the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Muhammad Matawalle; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; and the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.

The Director-General of the Department of State Service, Tosin Ajayi, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Muhammed Muhammed, are also members of the committee.

President Tinubu gave the directive on Wednesday at the Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House, Abuja, stressing the need for a coherent framework to respond to evolving security threats nationwide.

The President said the new framework would provide a common understanding of the threats facing the nation, the operational objectives to be achieved and the capabilities required to address them.

According to him, recent security successes, including the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, demonstrated the importance of improved coordination among defence, security and intelligence agencies.

“The operation demonstrated what can be achieved when our agencies work together with a clear objective and the necessary intelligence,” the President said.

President Tinubu noted that operational requirements were currently often considered individually, without sufficient reference to an agreed national threat assessment or unified medium-term plan, making coordination more difficult and limiting the efficient deployment of resources.

He said the National Threat Assessment would identify the principal threats facing the country, determine their relative urgency and establish operational objectives for addressing them.

The Strategic Defence Operations Plan, he added, would translate the assessment into clear operational priorities, identifying the forces and capabilities required in each theatre, existing capability gaps, equipment and support needs, and an implementation timetable.

Under the presidential directive, the committee may also consult or co-opt representatives of other ministries, departments and agencies where their participation is required.

President Tinubu directed the committee to commence work immediately and submit the completed National Threat Assessment and Strategic Defence Operations Plan for his consideration and approval within 90 days.

Once approved, the plan will serve as the principal framework for coordinating military and defence operations over the medium term.

It will also provide the basis for preparing a corresponding multi-year defence expenditure and procurement plan, ensuring that resources are directed towards agreed operational priorities and critical national security requirements.

The President further directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser to take all necessary steps to give immediate effect to the directives.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Mr Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan as the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, effective August 27, 2026.

Mr Enitan succeeds Mrs Didi Esther Walson-Jack, who will retire soon from the Federal Civil Service upon attaining the statutory retirement age of 60.

Mr Enitan, from Osun State, is the most senior Permanent Secretary in the Federal Civil Service.

He has served as Permanent Secretary for seven years and seven months, working at the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the Vice President. He is currently the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education.

He brings considerable institutional experience and a deep understanding of how the Federal Civil Service works to his new responsibility.

President Tinubu expresses his profound appreciation to Mrs Walson-Jack for her distinguished service to the nation and for the reforms, impact and innovations witnessed in the Civil Service during her tenure.

The President wishes her a fulfilling and successful life after service and conveys the nation's gratitude for her years of dedicated and impactful public service.

President Tinubu charges the incoming Head of the Civil Service of the Federation to consolidate on the reforms and innovations already underway, deepen professionalism and efficiency across the service, and build a more effective and responsive Civil Service capable of delivering on the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The President further urges Mr Enitan to lead a Civil Service that is professional, merit-driven, accountable, innovative, and responsive to Nigerians' needs and aspirations.

Enitan was born on December 12, 1966. He had his secondary education at Ajibode Grammar School, Ibadan and the College of Arts and Science, Ile-Ife. He later attended the University of Lagos and graduated in 1988 with a https://t.co/SWE1GYXk3f. in Finance and Banking.

TINUBU TASKS HOMELAND SECURITY ADVISER TO COORDINATE FIVE-YEAR NATIONAL SECURITY THREAT ASSESSMENT, DEFENCE PLAN

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate preparation of a comprehensive National Threat Assessment and a rolling five-year Strategic Defence Operations Plan to strengthen coordination across Nigeria’s defence, intelligence and security capabilities.

The President's Special Adviser on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa, will coordinate and provide secretariat support for the 11-man committee the President constituted to draft the strategic defence operations plan.

Other members of the committee are the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa; the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Muhammad Matawalle; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; and the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.

The Director-General of the Department of State Service, Tosin Ajayi, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Muhammed Muhammed, are also members of the committee.

President Tinubu gave the directive on Wednesday at the Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House, Abuja, stressing the need for a coherent framework to respond to evolving security threats nationwide.

The President said the new framework would provide a common understanding of the threats facing the nation, the operational objectives to be achieved and the capabilities required to address them.

According to him, recent security successes, including the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, demonstrated the importance of improved coordination among defence, security and intelligence agencies.

“The operation demonstrated what can be achieved when our agencies work together with a clear objective and the necessary intelligence,” the President said.

President Tinubu noted that operational requirements were currently often considered individually, without sufficient reference to an agreed national threat assessment or unified medium-term plan, making coordination more difficult and limiting the efficient deployment of resources.

He said the National Threat Assessment would identify the principal threats facing the country, determine their relative urgency and establish operational objectives for addressing them.

The Strategic Defence Operations Plan, he added, would translate the assessment into clear operational priorities, identifying the forces and capabilities required in each theatre, existing capability gaps, equipment and support needs, and an implementation timetable.

Under the presidential directive, the committee may also consult or co-opt representatives of other ministries, departments and agencies where their participation is required.

President Tinubu directed the committee to commence work immediately and submit the completed National Threat Assessment and Strategic Defence Operations Plan for his consideration and approval within 90 days.

Once approved, the plan will serve as the principal framework for coordinating military and defence operations over the medium term.

It will also provide the basis for preparing a corresponding multi-year defence expenditure and procurement plan, ensuring that resources are directed towards agreed operational priorities and critical national security requirements.

The President further directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser to take all necessary steps to give immediate effect to the directives.

The tragic loss of seven lives following the collapse of an abandoned tin mine pit in Kassa, Plateau State is a painful reminder of the dangers of unlicensed mining.

Please, do not put your lives at risk by working in abandoned pits without the necessary permits and training. Working through registered cooperatives gives miners access to proper guidance and safer ways to earn a living.

Plateau State has more than 4,000 legacy tin mining pits. Our task is to turn these abandoned sites from hazards into opportunities for productive projects in areas such as tourism, energy and fisheries. The Ministry has already rehabilitated 59 abandoned pits and we are working with the private sector to do more.

I also extend my deepest condolences to the government and people of Plateau State and to the families who lost loved ones. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.
