Pleased to share that our @SPAPolicyLab Director @aweis_ahmedsom joins @ChathamHouse’s Africa Programme (@AfricaProg) as an @SNForg Visiting Fellow and will be based in London for one year.
While at Chatham House, Aweis will conduct policy-relevant research on Somalia’s international and regional relations in a shifting global order, with the aim of supporting Somalia’s contributions to global governance. The research outputs will be jointly published by Chatham House and Somali Public Agenda.
The fellowship builds on the Chatham House Africa Programme’s success in hosting visiting fellows from Mozambique and Sierra Leone between 2023 and 2025, whose work focused on supporting their countries as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Our Deputy Director, @FarhanShabel, and @SPAPolicyLab Director, @aweisahmedM, participated in a half-day consultation session on the Somalia Higher Education Bill in Mogadishu. The session was organized by the Lower House Committee on Social Services, with representatives from universities, the Association of Somali Universities, and research institutions in attendance. The purpose of the session was to gather input from stakeholders on the bill before it proceeds to the next stage.
SPA’s representatives contributed to the discussion by highlighting key issues in specific articles, particularly those concerning the establishment of the National Higher Education Commission, which will serve as the regulatory body for the country’s higher education sector. They presented recommendations on the regulatory powers of the commission and the hiring conditions for the secretary of the commission. Our representatives emphasized the importance of maintaining the commission's autonomy while acknowledging the oversight role of the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education.
