Again, this fundamentally ignores the relationship that exists between resident doctors and consultants.
Supervision isn't just about ensuring they don't make mistakes (although that is part of it). It is to impart knowledge and to SHOW them how to think properly.

@jabberwock951 I'm a medic and even I harp on about "there's gold and golf". Use of a cart is IMO a mandatory qualification to this part of the history. 😉
Reading the profoundly important new report on intra familial child sex abuse by the Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel - it's devastating. This bit jumped out as relevant given last week. Coercive control is NOT always or even usually spotted by trained professionals.
While making high quality palliative care available more widely and at speed is undoubtedly necessary in a compassionate society, that alone isn't going to prevent people from feeling like they have no choices.
At the moment unfortunately the other two are even harder to find.
I've (sadly) been asked many times in my 15 years of clinical practice to 'put them out of their misery'.
Most of the time what people have needed was:
- palliative care
- psychological support
- social support
Never have I thought "alright I'll go get the phenobarbital"
I appreciate that I'm prolific today re assisted suicide. (By the weekend, I'll be asleep and / or watching Christmas movies. Or horror films...)
But here's something I wrote for @guardian that might help some disabled people's fears for changing the law

How good are doctors at predicting 6 month life expectancy?
Honest answer: Pathetic.
A study of over 100k terminally ill patients showed only 32% accuracy in predicting the patient was in their final 6 months.
A third of those patients were still alive over a year later.
This Assisted Suicide "safeguard" is not much better than tossing a coin.
Doctors are not psychics. We cannot see your future. You should not end your life based on our best guess.
If legalised, assisted suicide will be administered by the NHS
A letter signed by 3,400 healthcare professionals warns that inadequate health & hospice care means assisted suicide cannot be introduced safely while the NHS is broken
Even the best safeguards won't be safe enough
3 weeks until MPs vote on legalising medically assisted suicide in England & Wales
That means another reminder to please watch @BBC Better Off Dead? my documentary explaining why many disabled people, like me, who aren't religious but who oppose this law

Imagine if @NHSEngland actually employed the number of consultants it needs, rather than running things on the shoestring that causes waiting lists to spiral out of control.
What are you expecting, @DHSCgovuk? Exhausted consultants to give up their limited spare time for free?
Women have been collectively convinced that pregnancy is a health-neutral event and I am here to tell you that this is a tactic used to suppress freedom of informed choice.

Re #AssistedDying debate:
I’ve raised my concern about medical ethics & some have replied to say I wouldn’t need to take part.
But that is to misunderstand the concept & how deep it runs.
Short 🧵
Thanks for sharing, watching & commenting on my @BBC documentary Better Off Dead? explaining why me & many other disabled people oppose assisted suicide from a disability rights & not a religious perspective
The @openuniversity supported the making of it
