GRAIN CRISIS: SA IMPORTS FROM THE USA

South Africa has imported white maize for the first time since 2017, after experiencing poor local crops and strong demand from Zimbabwe.

The first shipment, 23,700 tonnes from the US, is being offloaded at Durban's port, with another shipment expected in February. South Africa’s maize production fell by 22.5% in 2023/24, and stocks are expected to last until March/April 2025.

The country consumes 11.7 million tonnes of maize per season but exports 1.5 million tonnes annually. Maize prices have skyrocketed by 43% for yellow maize and 70% for white maize.

Imports are expected to continue until April 2025, and the maize industry may end the season with only 600,000 to 700,000 tonnes.

Her name is Winnie Mashava (19)who went missing yesterday 01/01/2025. She got a job online and was told to go to Sunnyside and will get picked up there. She was last seen in Sunnyside getting into a grey car. Her phone is off and the guy who promised her a job says he never picked her up.
