STOKVEL SAVERS TURN TO GAMBLING
Gambling is becoming a growing threat to financial security in South Africa, affecting people across all income groups.
More than half of stokvel savers admitted gambling at least once in the past year because of financial pressure, highlighting the strain many households face.
Meanwhile, South Africans wagered R1.5-trillion in the 2024/25 financial year, with online gambling rising sharply.
Experts warn that gambling is designed to favour operators, leading many people into cycles of losses, debt and depleted savings.

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index scores the market's mood from 0 to 100.
Low score: fear. Crypto may be undervalued.
High score: greed. A bubble may be forming.
It's a handy snapshot, not a buy or sell signal by itself.
The market has a mood...
The fear and greed index is a useful pulse check for the markets. It turns volatility, momentum, social activity, Bitcoin dominance and search trends into a single sentiment score.

@IvynSambo It is a truly disgusting display by the Brink Campaign.
It speaks to their complete lack of any sort of ethics guiding their campaigns.
To lie in a public health emergency is surely some sort of crime?
Imagine a crisis facing our people. Instead of acting with basic humanity and speaking in a way that actually helps fix it, the DA chooses to play politics with the lives of South Africans. That party has no shame!
Currently, 25% of the petrol price we pay goes to the government as tax. Now that the government can see how expensive fuel has become, can they please reduce the fuel levy to around 10%? This would help a lot of South Africans and support economic growth!
I am deeply disappointed by the continued attempts by former Executive Mayor Cilliers Brink to exploit the water crisis in Bronkhorstspruit for political advantage, including through misleading claims about cholera.
At a time when residents are understandably concerned about their health and safety, Mr Brink has chosen to amplify fears of another cholera outbreak without adequately explaining the scientific findings available to date.
Let me be absolutely clear: cholera has not been identified as the cause of the gastrointestinal illness outbreak in Bronkhorstspruit.
