Today, the NCCIA served me a notice under Section 160 of the CrPC, ordering me to appear at its Karachi office on 16 October and to bring "all relevant digital devices."

The allegation against me, in full: "posting/sharing of Anti-State content on social media platforms."

That is all I have been told. The notice does not identify a single post. It does not name a complainant. It discloses no evidence. Yet it directs me to produce evidence "in support of my defense" against unspecified accusations.

The superior courts have repeatedly cautioned the NCCIA against exactly this. Anyone summoned over an allegation is entitled to the details of the complaint and the actual incriminating evidence against them, so they know what they are accused of. Vague notices summoning citizens cannot be issued. This notice violates that settled principle, and I object to it.

I am a journalist. I report on human rights in Pakistan, which very often means reporting on the abuse of state power. "Anti-state" is not an offence this notice even attempts to define, and journalism is not a cyber crime. A summons that names no offence but demands a reporter's devices is not an inquiry. It is a warning, to me and to every journalist watching.

Journalist @Benazir_Shah has built her reputation through hard work, accuracy and integrity. She also happens to be a woman — and that’s exactly why, when people want to discredit her journalism, they don’t attack her reporting, they attack her “morality.”

This AI video was not just a malicious attempt at character assassination. It was a reminder of the kind of harassment journalists — especially women — face for doing their job. When a male journalist is to be discredited, they go after his politics or sources of income. When a female journalist is targeted, they go after her dignity, her “honour.” Misogyny becomes the easiest, most effective weapon to try and silence her.

And that is a direct threat to press freedom. You can’t claim to respect journalism while enabling campaigns that humiliate a woman for simply being visible in public life.

What makes this episode uglier is where it came from. The video circulated through an account followed by PML‑N ministers, and I’ve seen similarly vile attacks on the women in my own life from accounts followed by @MaryamNSharif. This reminds us that women occupy high political offices not because of genuine acceptance or celebration of their role in public life, but because of allegiance to dynastic politics and political necessity.

Claims of "women empowerment" fall apart the moment a woman's dignity collides with political convenience.

Benazir Shah is being attacked not because her journalism is weak, but because it is strong — and because she is a woman. And that is precisely why we must call it out.
