Please consider signing this open letter expressing your dismay at the leniency of the MPTS’s sanction on NHS surgeon James Gilbert who, for over a decade, sexually harassed female trainees.
The letter is from the 4 brave women who testified. (1/4)
While perpetrators lately in the news were not members of our College, we remain determined to stop this behaviour. Our Code of Conduct is clear: no matter how technically competent or senior you are, if you abuse your position as a surgeon, you will have no place in our College.
🧵We have written to @the_mpts asking them to attend our Council to explain their handling of sexual misconduct cases. Our surgical community is concerned whether sufficient penalties are consistently being applied, especially where the GMC has pushed for a stronger sanction.
You can your support to the 4 female surgeons trying to make a stand against sexual misconduct and racism.

Both the DAUK and WPSMS have now also raised their concerns alongside them. @RoshanaMN@doctor_oxford
DAUK has taken the rare and serious step of writing to the Professional Standards Authority (@prof_standards) regarding the MPTS decision on James Gilbert. We've urged the PSA to refer this case to the High Court, viewing the 8-month suspension as woefully inadequate.
We fail to understand the suspension of surgeon James Gilbert for 8 months by the MPTS for >10yrs of proven sexual misconduct.
We stand with the witnesses in asking the PSA and @gmcuk to appeal the MPTS ruling. Please share
Harassment of patients rightly results in erasure from the GMC but harassment of trainees (also vulnerable) does not? It looks like he sexually harassed those for whom he was educational or clinical supervisor - direct control over their progression! Utterly sinister! @RoshanaMN
One of James Gilbert's victims just shared this with me.
She & the others fought for over 4 years to be believed - to be heard.
Above all, these 4 young female surgeons now fear that future perpetrators will be emboldened by the extraordinary leniency shown by GMC & MPTS 😔
Have been reading in full. Most disturbingly, the reflective statement, given on oath, was determined to be insincere by the tribunal, but a temporary sanction still given?
*SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN SURGERY*
One of these brave doctors is a friend. I know some of the turmoil they have been through
Please read this and sign the open letter to insist on greater sanctions for surgeon James Gilbert @wesstreeting@gmcuk

“Why do you work with the @gmcuk if you don’t agree with them on PA issue?”
Because the role I do? Is to tackle #Racism#Bias
To understand the difference in rulings
And whether “sexual harassment” has a gradation based on which punishment is handed out
That’s why I do it.
>60% experience sexual harassment, >90% witness it.
5% of GMC referrals make it to an MPTS Tribunal. 8 month suspension…
This is rife. And there is no deterrent.

Was supposed 2B a landmark case. Many watching - 1st case since NHSE sexual safety charter, GMC GMP guidance on sexual misconduct, RCSEng & Ed Codes of Conduct.
MPTS had an opportunity to show zero-tolerance. They chose 8m suspension. Strong message:Victims should stay silent.

@wesstreeting@AmandaPritchard@gmcuk@the_mpts@RCSnews@RCSEd@prof_standards Genuinely institutional change will only happen, it seems, if the NHS, GMC & MPTS actually confront their ongoing inaction & tolerance of sexual harassment of staff – instead of merely talking about it

2/ Grant an immediate exemption for doctors to public sector pension rules which are currently forcing them to retire in their fifties in alarming numbers.
I’ve found my first pay slip from August 2014. After my first month working as a doctor I took home £2,501.83.
Last month, after 95 months working as a doctor I took home £3,040.86.
There’s something not right there. #PayRestoration#OverworkedUnderpaid
