Lets get something straight about the @npconchain NFT you guys are spending dumb money on as $ETH craters.
👇is the NPC meme. 👇will ALWAYS be the NPC meme. Copying the name and rebranding to your art is a joke.
I have a good idea. Why dont you create something original?
Today’s artistic analysis: @npconchain
Quick Intro
This is a collection of 10,000 PFPs built around the concept of “non-playable characters,” which is a pretty original idea, if you ask me. Specially in this space where we are full of them haha.
The Characters
All the characters are based on the same basic template: a man with no facial features other than a nose. I think this is a good decision, as it reinforces the NPC concept , a character that is “not that important,” visually reduced to its most minimal expression.
The skin tone variations make the designs feel a bit more diverse, and together with the amount and variety of traits, the result is a collection of characters that are still quite identifiable.
My critiques in this area are 2: first, I don’t understand why there are no female characters in the entire collection. Second, while the color palette feels cohesive, since each piece uses a single background color, the collection can look a bit monochromatic and repetitive when viewed as a grid. This improves with some of the more colorful traits.
The Art
The style is cartoonish, but not necessarily childish. I really like the thick black lines, which create a strong outline. The small layers of light and shadow work very well, adding depth to the designs.
This is definitely a collection designed to be used as PFPs, and I think it works very well in that sense: clean characters, sharp lines, and easily recognizable designs, even at small sizes.
Traits and Rarities
Overall, I like the traits. There is a lot of variety, and they are well executed, although I don’t think they are particularly original. Many of them are the same traits we have been seeing for years, present in collections like Punks and BAYC.
I don’t see that much creativity in this area. However, I do like that there are no bizarre or meaningless combinations. The characters remain clean with almost any combination, while keeping a cohesive color palette.
My only complaint here is that some traits seem to include a different type of art style. For example, the broken glasses have an almost realistic texture, and in some other cases, you can see much thinner lines that don’t really match the general outline style of the character.
The collection also includes 30 1/1s, which I really like. You can clearly tell they are special and different from the rest and, in my opinion, that's key for any PFP collection.
Final Conclusion
The art feels fresh, the concept is original, and it works well as a PFP collection.
