I'm waiting for it to get dark here in Alaska, but I wanted to share the aurora from LAST NIGHT (Oct 7-8) as a lot of the area was clear later in the night and thus showed a quite beautiful auroral substorm over the Yukon and Alaska.
Funny story, and hopefully you can share in my pain, but I dropped off my car at the shop tonight to get worked on tomorrow. Got a ride from my roommate back home, and we're going to go out chasing tonight.
Find out that I left two of my cameras and all my tripods in my car which is locked at the auto shop with my keys inside handed to the mechanics!
I have one camera left but no tripod, so hand-holding it is! And no real-time videos for tonight's show..
This isn't as bad as making the drive then forgetting SD cards at home, though. I've done that before too, don't worry!

Moments ago: AR 4549 fired off an M6.7 flare and apparent Earth-directed CME. You can see the blast wave in the middle is wide and violent, rippling through the Sun's outer atmosphere. We will need to see coronagraph images + models to get the full story, though. Stay tuned!
The M6.7 CME is emerging from the occulting disk as seen here in CCOR-1. The CME was wide and fast. I am guessing we will see a notable Earth-directed component with the eruption.
Solar wind was calm (about 340-400 km/s) and conditions quiet to unsettled. A CME from Oct 6 should arrive early Friday, Oct 9, with G1-G2 storms (Kp 5-6) likely. A coronal hole stream then keeps things unsettled to active (Kp 3-4) through Saturday.
Hello everyone, here is your daily update on what the Sun is doing:
(Paraphrased from NOAA SWPC's recent forecast discussion)
AR 4549 made more C-class flares, the largest a C7.9 with a CME that may reach Earth early Oct 11 UTC. NOAA: 40% chance of M-class flares.
"Cold and Clear"—Fox, Alaska. This photo is the December page of my 2027 Awesome Auroras calendar, which launches tomorrow, Friday, October 9 at 9 AM Alaska time.
The December sidebar is about the cold. Fairbanks can get colder than 40 below, but here is the thing about those nights: when it is that cold, the sky is almost always clear. December and January also have the most availability for tours and lodging.
